Zodiac Compatibility Calculator
Zodiac compatibility compares two Sun signs by their element, their mode and the angle between them around the zodiac, the classical basis for calling signs easy or challenging together. Pick your sign and theirs. The result explains how the two signs relate and links to a full guide for popular pairs.

How does zodiac compatibility work?
Sun sign compatibility looks at two things. The first is the element of each sign: fire, earth, air or water. Signs of the same element tend to share a temperament, and fire with air or earth with water are traditionally seen as supportive. The second is the distance between the two signs around the zodiac, which astrologers read as an angle, the same way they read aspects between planets.
This calculator shows both and explains them in plain words. It does not show a percentage. Some compatibility sites show scores like 87 percent, but no traditional method produces such a number; it is each site's own scoring on top of the same element and angle logic you see here.
What do the angles between signs mean?
Counting the short way around the zodiac, two signs are between zero and six signs apart. Each distance has a classical name and a traditional reading.
| Signs apart | Angle | Name | Traditional reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0° | Same sign | Instant understanding, shared blind spots |
| 1 | 30° | Semi-sextile | Little in common, learning from each other |
| 2 | 60° | Sextile | Friendly and easy when both make an effort |
| 3 | 90° | Square | Friction and attraction, growth through conflict |
| 4 | 120° | Trine | Natural ease and shared values |
| 5 | 150° | Quincunx | Constant adjustment, puzzling but interesting |
| 6 | 180° | Opposition | Strong pull between complementary opposites |
How the zodiac compatibility calculator works: rules and sources
Where astrologers disagree, we pick one rule and say which. These are the rules behind your result:
| Rule | Value we use | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Elements | Fire with air and earth with water count as supportive | Classical astrology |
| Angle | Distance counted the short way: 0 to 6 signs apart | Classical aspects between signs |
| Sun sign dates | Approximate cusps; they shift by a day in some years | Tropical zodiac |
| Scores | No percentage | No traditional method produces one |
Which zodiac signs are most compatible?
By the classical rules, the easiest pairings are signs of the same element (four signs apart, the trine) and signs in supportive elements two apart (the sextile). Aries, Leo and Sagittarius share fire; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn share earth; Gemini, Libra and Aquarius share air; Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces share water.
Easy is not the same as good, though. Many long and happy couples have squares or oppositions between their Sun signs, and plenty of trines fizzle. The angle describes the texture of a relationship, not its outcome. Popular pairs such as Virgo and Scorpio or Leo and Aquarius have their own guides below the calculator.
What are the elements and modes of each sign?
The mode, also called the quality or modality, describes how a sign acts. Cardinal signs start things, fixed signs keep them going and mutable signs adapt. Two signs of the same mode share a rhythm, which helps in daily life and can also make both people equally stubborn or equally restless.
| Sign | Approximate dates | Element | Mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mar 21 to Apr 19 | Fire | Cardinal |
| Taurus | Apr 20 to May 20 | Earth | Fixed |
| Gemini | May 21 to Jun 20 | Air | Mutable |
| Cancer | Jun 21 to Jul 22 | Water | Cardinal |
| Leo | Jul 23 to Aug 22 | Fire | Fixed |
| Virgo | Aug 23 to Sep 22 | Earth | Mutable |
| Libra | Sep 23 to Oct 22 | Air | Cardinal |
| Scorpio | Oct 23 to Nov 21 | Water | Fixed |
| Sagittarius | Nov 22 to Dec 21 | Fire | Mutable |
| Capricorn | Dec 22 to Jan 19 | Earth | Cardinal |
| Aquarius | Jan 20 to Feb 18 | Air | Fixed |
| Pisces | Feb 19 to Mar 20 | Water | Mutable |
Can I check zodiac compatibility by date of birth?
Yes, in two ways. If you know both birth dates, you can look up both Sun signs in the table above, or let the big three calculator work out the exact sign, which matters if one of you was born near the edge of a sign.
If you also know where and roughly when you were both born, the birth chart compatibility calculator goes much further. It compares the Moon, Venus, Mars, Mercury and rising signs as well as the Sun, and it lists the closest aspects between the two charts. That is the difference between a sign match and a chart match.
Why Sun signs are only the start
Everyone born in the same month or so shares a Sun sign, so Sun sign compatibility is a generalization by design. It is a good conversation starter and a fair first sketch. For anything more personal, astrologers look at the Moon for emotional needs, Venus and Mars for attraction, and the angles between both charts.
However you use it, treat compatibility as entertainment and food for thought. No sign combination decides whether a relationship works. The people in it do.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the most compatible zodiac sign for me?
By tradition, the signs of your own element and the supportive element are the easiest matches: fire with fire and air, earth with earth and water. Pick your sign and any other in the calculator to see how they relate.
How is zodiac compatibility calculated?
We compare the elements and modes of the two signs and the angle between them around the zodiac, from 0 to 180 degrees. Each angle has a classical name and meaning.
Why is there no compatibility percentage?
Because no traditional method produces one. Percentages on other sites are each site's own scoring on top of the same element and angle rules. We explain the rules instead.
Can I check compatibility by date of birth?
Yes. Find both Sun signs from the dates, or use our birth chart compatibility calculator to compare two full charts from birth date, time and place.
Are opposite signs compatible?
Opposite signs share a mode and sit in complementary elements, so astrologers describe a strong pull between them. It tends to work when both people value what the other brings.
Is zodiac compatibility real?
It is a tradition of interpretation, not a scientific test. Many people find it a helpful way to talk about differences, and it works best as entertainment and reflection.
