Big Three Calculator: Sun, Moon and Rising

Your big three are your sun, moon and rising signs, the three placements most astrologers look at first. Enter your birth date, time and place to see your sun, moon and rising signs together, with the exact degree of each.

What the big three are

In astrology, your big three are your sun sign, your moon sign and your rising sign. Together they give a much fuller picture than your sun sign alone, which is why people ask each other about them.

Your sun sign describes your core identity and what you are building toward. Your moon sign describes your emotional needs and how you react when something matters to you. Your rising sign describes how you come across at first and how you approach new situations.

How to find your big three

To find all three, you need your birth date, your birth time and your birthplace. The calculator converts your local time to universal time using the time zone history of your birthplace, then calculates the real positions of the Sun and Moon and the sign rising on the eastern horizon.

We use the open-source astronomy-engine library and the tropical zodiac. In seven reference charts, the Sun and Ascendant matched Swiss Ephemeris within 0.7 arcseconds and the Moon within 1.0 arcsecond.

How the big three calculator works: rules and sources

Where astrologers disagree, we pick one rule and say which. These are the rules behind your result:

If you do not know your birth time

Your sun sign is almost always certain from the date alone. Your moon sign usually is too, but the Moon changes signs every two and a half days, so on some dates it depends on the hour. Your rising sign changes about every two hours, so it cannot be calculated without a time.

Without a birth time, we calculate a noon chart, show your sun sign, show your moon sign or both possible moon signs, and leave the rising sign out. We would rather tell you we do not know than give you a guess that looks like a fact.

Reading your three signs together

The interesting part is how the three signs fit. When they share an element, like three water signs, people often feel very consistent inside and out. When they differ, for example a fire sun with an earth moon and an air rising, you may recognize yourself as someone who acts quickly, needs stability to recover and comes across as curious and social.

Your free result shows all three signs with a longer description of each, your chart wheel and planet table. The personal reading for $29 adds the rest of your chart and your numerology.

Limits

The positions are calculated precisely. The meanings are an astrological tradition, not a personality test. Read them as a way to think about yourself, not as a definition.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What are my big 3 signs?

Your big three are your sun sign, moon sign and rising sign. Enter your birth date, time and place in the calculator above to see all three.

What's my big 3 if I don't know my birth time?

You will still get your sun sign and, in most cases, your moon sign. Your rising sign needs a birth time, so we leave it out rather than guess.

How do I find my big 3?

You need your birth date, birth time and birthplace. The calculator finds where the Sun and Moon were and which sign was rising in the east at that moment.

What are my three zodiac signs?

When people talk about their three zodiac signs, they usually mean their sun, moon and rising signs. This calculator gives you all three.

Which of the big three is the most important?

Astrologers usually say they work together. The sun sign is the core, the moon sign is the emotional side and the rising sign is the first impression. None of them tells the full story alone.

Why is my moon sign marked as uncertain?

Because the Moon changed signs on the day you were born and we do not have your birth time. We show both possible signs so you can read both.
