What is a soul urge number?

The soul urge number is one of the three core name numbers in Pythagorean numerology, next to the expression number and the personality number. It is worked out from the vowels of your full birth name, and it is read as a description of your inner motivation: what you long for when nobody is watching, what makes a day feel worthwhile, what you would choose if nothing else got in the way.

Numerologists also call it the heart's desire number. Both names describe the same calculation. Where the expression number is about your talents and the personality number about the first impression you make, the soul urge is about wanting. That is why many people find it the most personal of the three, and sometimes the most surprising.

How do you calculate your soul urge number?

Write down your full name as it appears on your birth certificate, middle names included. Mark every vowel, give each one its value from the Pythagorean table, add up the vowels of each name separately, and reduce each total to a single digit. Then add those results and reduce once more. The numbers 11, 22 and 33 are master numbers and are kept as they are at every step.

Reducing each name on its own before adding them is the method most numerology books teach, because it keeps a master number that lives inside one name. Our calculator uses exactly this method and shows each step, so you can check it by hand.

How the soul urge calculator works: rules and sources

Where numerologists disagree, we pick one rule and say which. These are the rules behind your number:

A worked example

Take the name Emily Rose Carter. In Emily, the vowels are E (5) and I (9), and the final Y counts as a vowel too because it does not touch another vowel, so it adds 7. That gives 21, which reduces to 3. In Rose, O (6) and E (5) make 11, a master number, so it stays 11. In Carter, A (1) and E (5) make 6.

Now add the three results: 3 plus 11 plus 6 is 20, and 20 reduces to 2. Emily Rose Carter has a soul urge number of 2. If you added every vowel in one long row instead, you would get 38, then 11, a different answer. That is the reason the method matters, and the reason we show every step.

Is Y a vowel in numerology?

Sometimes. The rule we use is a common one: Y counts as a vowel when it sounds like one and does not sit next to another vowel, as in Lynn, Mary or Bryan. When it touches a vowel, as in Maya or Yolanda, it is treated as a consonant.

Numerology schools do not fully agree on Y, and a few treat it as a vowel only when there is no other vowel in the syllable. If your name has a Y, it is worth knowing that another calculator may give a different soul urge number for that reason alone. The rule is also described on our page about how we calculate.

What does each soul urge number mean?

The short meanings below are the traditional themes for each number. Your result in the calculator comes with a longer description, written for the soul urge specifically rather than borrowed from the life path.

3Expression, joy and an audience for your ideas
4Order, security and work that holds up
5Freedom, variety and new experiences
6A loving home and people to care for
7Understanding, privacy and time to think
8Achievement, influence and solid results
9Meaning, generosity and a wider purpose

Which name should you use?

Traditional numerology uses the full name you were given at birth, because it is read as a description of what you came in with. If you changed your name through marriage or chose a new one, you can calculate both. Many people read the birth name as the inner layer and the current name as the way they present themselves now.

Accents and hyphens do not change the result: we remove accents and treat a hyphenated name as one word. Nicknames are best left out unless they are the name you were actually registered with.

How the soul urge fits with your other numbers

The soul urge rarely stands alone. When it matches your life path number, people often describe a strong sense that what they want and the direction their life takes line up. When the two differ, the gap is often the most interesting part: a life path 8 with a soul urge 7, for example, may build a successful career and still long for quiet and depth.

What a soul urge number can and cannot tell you

Numerology is a tradition of interpretation, not a science. A soul urge number cannot tell you what you will do, and it says nothing about your health, your finances or legal matters. It is best used as a prompt for reflection: read the description, notice what fits, and ask where you see it in your own life.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is my soul urge number?

Your soul urge number is the sum of the vowels in your full birth name, reduced to a single digit or a master number (11, 22 or 33). Enter your name in the calculator above to see it, with every vowel and its value.

Is the soul urge number the same as the heart's desire number?

Yes. Soul urge and heart's desire are two names for the same number, calculated from the vowels of your full birth name.

How do you calculate your soul urge number?

Give each vowel its Pythagorean value (A 1, E 5, I 9, O 6, U 3, Y 7 when it acts as a vowel), add the vowels of each name, reduce each name to one digit, add the results and reduce again. Keep 11, 22 and 33 as they are.

Why does another calculator give me a different soul urge number?

The usual reasons are the letter Y, which schools treat differently, and the order of reducing. Some sites add all vowels in one row instead of reducing each name first, which can lose or create a master number.

Should I use my married name?

Traditional numerology uses your birth name. You can calculate your current name as well and read it as the way you present yourself today.

What does a master number soul urge mean?

A soul urge of 11, 22 or 33 is read as an especially strong inner drive: inspiration for 11, building for 22, caring service for 33. Each also carries the theme of its base number, 2, 4 or 6.
