Free Birth Chart Calculator
A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were at the moment you were born, seen from your birthplace. Enter your birth date, then your time and place. You get the chart wheel, every planet in its sign and house, and what each placement means.
Step 1 of 2
What a birth chart shows
Your birth chart freezes the sky at one moment. It records the sign each planet was in, how far into that sign it was, and, if you know your birth time, which of the twelve houses it fell into. Astrologers read the chart as a whole: the planets describe parts of a personality, the signs describe their style, and the houses describe the areas of life where they show up.
Most people start with three points. The Sun sign is the one you already know from your birthday. The Moon sign describes your emotional needs. The rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon and is often read as the way you meet the world. Together they are called the big three, and our big three calculator shows just those if that is all you want.
What you need to calculate your natal chart
You need three things: your birth date, your birth time and your birthplace. The date sets the sign of the Sun and of the slow planets. The time and place set the Moon to the exact degree, the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses.
The time matters more than people expect. The Ascendant moves through all twelve signs in about a day, so it changes roughly every two hours, and a house cusp can shift by several degrees in a few minutes. The time on a birth certificate is the best source. If you only know it roughly, the planet signs are still reliable; treat the rising sign and the houses with care.
- Birth date: Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and the outer planets.
- Birth time: the Moon to the degree, the rising sign, the Midheaven and all twelve houses.
- Birthplace: the time zone (including daylight saving time in that year) and the latitude the houses depend on.
Can I get a birth chart without a birth time?
Yes. Tick "I don't know my birth time" and the calculator draws a noon chart. Every planet still lands in the right sign unless it changed signs that day, and the result tells you when that happened. What you cannot get without a time is the rising sign, the Midheaven and the houses, so the chart leaves them out instead of guessing.
The Moon is the one planet that often changes signs within a day. If it did on your birth date, the result says so and names both possible Moon signs.
How the planets, signs, houses and aspects fit together
A useful way to read a chart is as a sentence. The planet is the subject: Venus is how you love and what you find beautiful, Mars is how you go after what you want. The sign is the adjective: Venus in Taurus loves slowly and loyally, Venus in Gemini wants conversation and variety. The house is the setting: Venus in the 10th house brings that style into your career, in the 4th into your home life.
Aspects are the angles between planets. A trine (120 degrees) or sextile (60 degrees) is read as an easy link, a square (90 degrees) or opposition (180 degrees) as tension that pushes you to grow, and a conjunction as two planets working as one. Our results list your closest aspects with their orb, the distance from the exact angle in degrees. The tighter the orb, the stronger the aspect is usually considered.
| Planet | Stands for |
|---|---|
| Sun | Core identity, will, what gives you energy |
| Moon | Emotions, comfort, what makes you feel safe |
| Mercury | Thinking, speaking, learning |
| Venus | Love, taste, values, what you enjoy |
| Mars | Drive, anger, how you take action |
| Jupiter | Growth, optimism, where you are generous |
| Saturn | Discipline, limits, long-term effort |
| Uranus | Change, independence, sudden breaks |
| Neptune | Imagination, ideals, what is hard to pin down |
| Pluto | Power, intensity, deep transformation |
What you get for free and what the reading adds
The free result shows your chart wheel, every planet with its sign, degree and house, your rising sign and Midheaven, your north node, your closest aspects, and a short meaning for each planet in its sign. It costs nothing; we only ask for your first name and email, and send you a link back to your chart.
The paid personal reading takes the same chart further. It writes out what each house placement and each close aspect means for you, ties the chart to your numerology, and comes as a web page and PDF. You can see a sample before you buy.
How accurate is this birth chart calculator?
The positions come from astronomy-engine, an open-source astronomy library, in the tropical zodiac with Placidus houses. We tested them against Swiss Ephemeris reference charts published by Astrodienst: across seven charts the largest planet difference was under 0.01 degree, far below anything that could change a sign or house in practice. Above the polar circles, where Placidus breaks down, the chart switches to Whole Sign houses and says so.
Time zones come from the official IANA database, including historical daylight saving rules, so a birth in 1943 or in Indiana before 2006 gets the right offset. The details are on our page about how we calculate.
If another site shows a slightly different degree, the usual reasons are a different house system, the true instead of the mean lunar node, or a different time zone guess for an old date.
Where to go next
If one placement stands out, the single calculators explain it in more depth: the Moon sign, rising sign and Venus sign pages each go further than the short meanings here. To compare your chart with someone else's, use birth chart compatibility. To see where your planets fall on a world map, try the astrocartography chart.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my birth chart?
Enter your birth date, birth time and birthplace in the calculator at the top of this page. It works out the position of every planet at that moment and draws your chart, with the meaning of each placement below it.
Is this birth chart calculator really free?
Yes. The chart wheel, every planet in its sign and house, the aspects and the short meanings are free. We ask for your first name and email before the full chart. Only the longer personal reading is paid.
What is the difference between a birth chart and a natal chart?
None. Birth chart, natal chart, astrology chart and horoscope chart all mean the same map of the sky at the moment of your birth.
What if I don't know my birth time?
You still get every planet in its sign, calculated for noon. The rising sign, Midheaven and houses need a time, so they are left out, and the result flags the Moon if it changed signs that day.
Which house system do you use?
Placidus, a widely used system in Western astrology, with Whole Sign houses for births above the polar circles, where Placidus cannot be calculated.
Why is my chart different on another website?
Usually because of a different house system, a different lunar node (mean or true) or a different time zone for an old date. Planet signs almost never differ between careful calculators.
Does my birth chart predict my future?
No. A birth chart describes tendencies that many people find worth reflecting on. It is offered for entertainment and self-reflection, not as a forecast or as advice.
