Astrology Reading: What You Get and What to Check
An astrology reading interprets your birth chart, the sky at your moment and place of birth, as a free report, a written reading or a live session.
An astrology reading takes your birth chart, the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets when you were born, and explains what astrologers traditionally associate with them. Readings range from free computer reports to written documents and live sessions with an astrologer. This guide compares the options, explains what drives the price and lists what to check before you pay.
What is an astrology reading?
Every astrology reading starts from the same raw material: the chart for your date, time and place of birth. That chart records which sign each planet was in, which sign was rising on the eastern horizon and how the planets were angled to one another. A reading is the step from those positions to words.
What separates one reading from another is who or what does the interpreting, how much of the chart it covers and whether it focuses on your nature, a relationship, a period of time or a single question. A two-paragraph Sun sign description and a two-hour session about your whole chart are both called readings, which is why the word alone tells you very little.
What are the types of astrology readings?
Most readings fall into one of five groups. The table shows what each covers and what you need to bring.
| Type | What it covers | Birth time needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Natal or birth chart reading | Your planets, signs, houses and main aspects, read as a portrait of tendencies | Yes, for the rising sign and houses |
| Compatibility or synastry reading | Two charts compared: how one person's planets meet the other's | Helpful, not required |
| Transit or forecast reading | How current planet positions touch your chart over a period of time | Helpful |
| Return reading (solar or Saturn) | A planet back at its birth position, such as your yearly solar return or your Saturn return | Helpful |
| Horary or question reading | A chart cast for the moment a question is asked | No, the time of the question is used |
If you are new to astrology, a natal chart reading is the usual starting point, because every other kind builds on it. You can explore the core of your chart for free with our big three calculator, and see what a full natal reading should contain on our birth chart reading page.
Free report, written reading or live session?
A free computer report is generated instantly from your chart. Large astrology portals offer them, and they are a good way to see your positions and some standard descriptions. Their limit is depth: they tend to list placements one by one without connecting them.
A written reading is a longer document prepared for your chart. Some are assembled from prewritten passages, some are written by a person, and some use software to help. A good written reading covers the whole chart consistently and shows the positions it relies on, so you can check them.
A live session with an astrologer is a conversation. The astrologer can ask what is going on in your life and follow up on what matters to you. That is the one thing a document cannot do. Sessions are usually the most expensive option and depend heavily on the person you book.
How much does an astrology reading cost?
Prices vary so widely that a single number would mislead you. What drives the price is mostly time: a free report costs the provider nothing per customer, a written reading costs the time to build or write it, and a live session costs an hour or more of a professional's time plus preparation.
As a rough order, free computer reports cost nothing, written readings usually cost a one-time fee, and live sessions are usually priced per session or per minute. We have not yet checked current session prices on booking sites ourselves, so we do not quote a range here.
Our own personal reading is a written reading for a one-time $29, with no subscription. It combines your birth chart with your numerology and shows every number and position it uses.
Is there a free astrology reading?
Yes, in the sense of a free chart and standard descriptions. Our calculators give you free results for your Sun, Moon and rising sign, your Venus sign, your north node and more, each with the calculation shown. For the full result we ask only for your first name and email.
Be careful with offers that call themselves a free reading but ask for payment details, or that turn into a subscription after a trial. A free reading should be free without a card.
What should I check before paying for a reading?
These questions apply to any provider, including us.
- Does it use your full birth data? A reading that only asks for your birth date cannot include your rising sign or houses.
- Does it show the positions? You should be able to see each planet's sign and degree and check them against another source.
- Is the price clear? Look for a one-time price, or read exactly how and when a subscription renews.
- Is there a refund policy you can read before paying?
- Does it avoid promises? A reading that guarantees love, money or health outcomes is selling something other than astrology.
- Who writes it? Find out whether the text comes from a person, prewritten passages, software or a mix.
Is an online astrology reading accurate?
There are two kinds of accuracy. The first is the calculation: whether the planet positions, rising sign and houses are correct for your birth moment. That part can be checked, and good software gets it right to a tiny fraction of a degree when the birth time and place are correct. We publish our own accuracy checks.
The second is the interpretation, and that is a matter of tradition, not measurement. Astrology is a symbolic language. A reading can be thoughtful, well written and personally meaningful, but no reading can be proven true. We present all our results for entertainment and self-reflection, and nothing here is advice about health, money or legal matters.
How to get the most from a reading
Find your exact birth time before you start. In the US, the long-form birth certificate usually lists it. Then read slowly, and note what fits and what does not. A reading works best as a set of prompts for your own thinking, and the passages that do not fit can be just as useful as the ones that do.
