Rarely. Mars usually spends around six to eight weeks in a sign, and in some years far longer, so on most calendar days its sign does not change. The date alone is enough for almost everyone.

Where is Mars strong or weak?
Classical astrology rates each planet by the sign it sits in. Mars rules Aries and, by the traditional scheme, Scorpio, so in those two signs it acts in its own way without having to adapt. It is exalted in Capricorn, where its force tends to come out disciplined and well aimed.

Detriment and fall are labels from a scoring system, not a forecast of failure. A Mars in Libra can be an excellent negotiator, and a Mars in Cancer often fights harder for family than anyone else in the room. The labels only say that Mars has to express itself in a style that is not its first instinct.
Why can Mars stay in one sign for months?
Mars needs close to two years to travel once around the zodiac as seen from Earth. Most of that time it moves steadily forward. Roughly every two years, as Earth overtakes it on the inside track, Mars appears to stand still and drift backward for a couple of months. Astrologers call this Mars retrograde.
A retrograde loop can keep Mars inside one sign far longer than usual. Mars entered Gemini in late August 2022, turned retrograde there, and did not leave for Cancer until late March 2023, a stay of about seven months. In the most recent loop, Mars crossed into Leo in the fall of 2024, backed out into Cancer at the start of 2025, and came back to Leo for the spring, staying until mid-June. Anyone born in those stretches should let the calculator check the exact date rather than rely on a printed table.
Being born during a retrograde is often read as a more inward use of Mars: anger that gets processed before it is shown, or effort that goes into revising rather than launching. It is one detail in a chart, not a defect.
