North Node Calculator
Your north node is the point where the Moon's path crossed the Sun's path at your birth; astrologers read its sign as the direction of growth in your life. Enter your birth date. Most dates need nothing else, because the node stays in one sign for about a year and a half.
What is the north node in astrology?
The lunar nodes are not planets. They are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun through the sky. The north node is the crossing where the Moon moves north, and the south node lies exactly opposite. Eclipses happen near these points, which is why astrologers have watched them for thousands of years.
In modern Western astrology, the north node is read as a direction of growth: qualities that feel unfamiliar at first but become more rewarding over time. The south node describes what comes easily, the habits and talents you fall back on. The pair is often summed up as "where you are going" and "where you are coming from".
How do I find my north node?
Enter your birth date in the calculator above. It computes the position of the node at noon UTC on that day and checks whether the node changed signs during your birth day anywhere in the world. If it did, which happens only on a few days every year and a half, the result names both signs and the moment of the change, and you can add your birth time and place to settle it.
The node moves very slowly, about three minutes of arc a day, so your birth time almost never changes the sign. It does matter for the house your node falls in. That needs a full chart, which is part of the personal reading.
Mean node or true node?
There are two ways to calculate the node. The mean node follows the average motion and always moves backward through the zodiac. The true node, sometimes called the osculating node, adds the small wobbles of the Moon's orbit and can briefly move forward. The two usually differ by less than two degrees.
We use the mean node, calculated with the formula published by the astronomer Jean Meeus, and we checked it against Swiss Ephemeris reference values: the largest difference was a fraction of an arcminute. Because the two methods can disagree near the edge of a sign, another site may show a different north node sign if you were born within a degree or two of a sign change. Our methods are listed on the how we calculate page.
How the north node calculator works: rules and sources
Where astrologers disagree, we pick one rule and say which. These are the rules behind your result:
| Rule | Value we use | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Calculated at 12:00 UTC on your birth date | astronomy-engine; mean node within 18.4 arcseconds of Swiss Ephemeris in 7 reference charts |
| Sign change on the birth day | Whole day checked in every time zone from UTC+14 to UTC-12; if the sign changed, both signs and the exact moment are shown | Our method |
| Node type | Mean node | Formula by Jean Meeus; the true node usually differs by less than two degrees |
How long does the north node stay in one sign?
The nodes take about 18.6 years to travel backward through all twelve signs, so they spend roughly 18 to 19 months in each one. Everyone born in that window shares the same north node sign. That is why astrologers read the node together with its house and with the planets it touches, which are personal, rather than by sign alone.
Your full result lists the exact dates your node sign began and ended. The same cycle also gives the nodal returns, when the transiting node comes back to your natal position: at about 18 and a half, 37 and 56 years of age.

How do you read the north node and south node together?
The two nodes always sit in opposite signs, so they describe one axis rather than two separate things. A useful way to read them is as a balance: the south node is not something to escape, it is a set of skills you already have. The north node asks you to add what is missing, so those skills serve a larger purpose.
Someone with the north node in Libra and the south node in Aries, for example, may be good at acting alone and quick to decide. The growth is in learning to share decisions without losing that courage. Read this way, the nodes describe a direction, not a verdict on who you are.
What the north node cannot tell you
Astrology is a symbolic tradition, and the meanings of the nodes are interpretations that have changed over time. Older Western astrology treated them mainly as points of eclipse and fortune; the idea of a life direction is more recent. Your north node does not predict events and says nothing about your health, money or legal questions. Use it as a lens for reflection.
If you want to look at more of your chart, the big three calculator gives your Sun, Moon and rising sign, and the Saturn return page shows another long cycle that astrologers connect with growing up.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is my north node?
Your north node is the sign of the Moon's ascending node on your birth date. Enter your birth date above to find it, with the exact degree and its opposite point, the south node.
Do I need my birth time to find my north node?
Almost never for the sign, because the node moves only about three minutes of arc a day. You need your birth time and place for the house your node falls in.
What is the difference between the north node and the south node?
They are opposite points on the same axis. The north node is read as the direction of growth, the south node as familiar habits and talents you already have.
Why does another site show a different north node sign?
Some sites use the true node and some the mean node. The two can differ by up to about two degrees, which changes the sign only if you were born close to a sign change. We use the mean node and say so.
How long is the north node in each sign?
About 18 to 19 months. The nodes move backward through all twelve signs in roughly 18.6 years.
What is a nodal return?
A nodal return is when the transiting node comes back to the position it had at your birth. It happens at about 18 and a half, 37 and 56 years of age.
