Rising Sign Calculator
Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place of your birth. Your rising sign needs your birth date, birth time and birthplace. Enter all three and the calculator finds the sign that was rising in the east.
Step 1 of 2
What a rising sign is
Your rising sign, also called your ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. In astrology, it is linked with first impressions: how you come across to people who are meeting you, how you approach new situations, and the style you show the world.
If your sun sign is who you are at the core, your rising sign is more like the front door. People often say their rising sign describes them better at a first meeting than their sun sign does.
How we calculate your rising sign
The rising sign depends on the rotation of the Earth, so we need to know exactly when and where you were born. First, your local birth time is converted to universal time using the full time zone history of your birthplace, including old daylight saving rules. Then we calculate the local sidereal time for your exact longitude and find the point of the zodiac that was on the eastern horizon at your latitude.
The calculation uses the open-source astronomy-engine library and the tropical zodiac. We checked our Ascendant against Swiss Ephemeris in seven reference charts: the largest difference was 0.7 arcseconds. Your result also shows your first house and the Placidus house system that starts from it. For births above the polar circles, where Placidus is not defined, we switch to Whole Sign houses and say so.
How the rising sign calculator works: rules and sources
Where astrologers disagree, we pick one rule and say which. These are the rules behind your result:
| Rule | Value we use | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Ascendant | From local sidereal time and the true obliquity of the ecliptic | Checked against Swiss Ephemeris: within 0.7 arcseconds in 7 reference charts |
| House system | Placidus; Whole Sign above the polar circles | A widely used system in modern Western astrology |
| Birth time | Required; without it there is no rising sign | The Ascendant moves through all twelve signs in about a day |
| Time zone | IANA time zone database, historical daylight saving included | iana.org/time-zones, checked October 12, 2026 |
| Birthplace | Bundled list of about 3,000 cities with coordinates | GeoNames, CC BY 4.0 |
Why the exact birth time matters
The rising sign changes about every two hours, and the ascendant moves roughly one degree every four minutes. A birth time that is off by half an hour can shift you into a different sign if you were born near the edge.
The most reliable source is a birth certificate or hospital record. If you only know an approximate time, try the calculation with the earliest and latest possible times. If both give the same sign, you can be fairly confident. If you do not know your birth time at all, a rising sign cannot be calculated, and we will not guess one.
Reading your result
Your free result shows your rising sign, its degree and a full description of how this rising sign shapes first impressions and the way you start things, plus your chart wheel.
Your rising sign also sets up the twelve houses of your chart, so it affects where everything else in your chart falls. The personal reading for $29 walks through that whole picture.
Limits
The ascendant is a precise point that we calculate carefully. Its meaning is an astrological tradition. Use your result as one more angle on yourself, not as a description that has to fit.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my rising sign?
You need your birth date, exact birth time and birthplace. Enter them into the calculator above and it finds the sign on the eastern horizon at that moment.
Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
No. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so without a time it cannot be calculated reliably. We do not guess it.
Is the rising sign the same as the ascendant?
Yes. Both terms describe the zodiac sign and degree rising on the eastern horizon when you were born.
What does my rising sign mean?
In astrology, it describes how you come across at first, how you approach new situations and the style you show others. Your result includes a description for your sign.
Why do I get a different rising sign elsewhere?
Most differences come from the birth time, the birthplace or the time zone. Old daylight saving rules are a common source of errors. We use the full time zone history of your birthplace.
What does scorpio rising mean?
Scorpio rising is often described as a reserved, observant first impression with a lot going on underneath. Calculate your own rising sign above to read the full description.
