What is Black Moon Lilith?

Black Moon Lilith is a calculated point, not a planet or a moon you could see through a telescope. The Moon travels around Earth on an oval path, so once per orbit it reaches its most distant spot, called the apogee. Smooth out the wobbles in that spot over time and you get the mean apogee. Astrologers call it Black Moon Lilith and place it in your chart like any planet.

The name comes from Jewish folklore. In a medieval retelling, Lilith is Adam's first wife, made from the same earth he was, who refused to take a lower place and left Eden rather than give in. Later traditions turned her into a night demon. Since the 1970s, many writers have read her instead as a figure of independence and of a woman pushed out for saying no.

Lilith is a modern addition to astrology. Classical astrologers worked with the Sun, the Moon and five visible planets; Lilith appears in astrological writing only in the 20th century and became common in charts in its second half. It sits beside newer points such as Chiron, not among the old foundations.

Which Lilith does this calculator use?

Several different things carry the name Lilith, and that is the main reason two websites can give you two different Lilith signs. Here is what each one is:

  • Mean Black Moon Lilith: the averaged lunar apogee. It moves steadily and is the version most astrologers and calculators mean. This is the one we compute.
  • True or oscillating (osculating) Lilith: the apogee of the Moon's orbit at one exact moment. Because the Sun keeps tugging on that orbit, this point swings back and forth around the mean one and can land in a neighboring sign.
  • Asteroid Lilith, number 1181: a real small body in the asteroid belt that happens to share the name. Its position has nothing to do with the Moon.
  • Dark Moon Lilith: a second moon of Earth that some astrologers proposed in the early 20th century. Astronomers have never found it, so it is treated as hypothetical.

We use the mean apogee because it is the most common choice and because it does not jump around. Our formula takes Jean Meeus's standard expression for the Moon's mean perigee and shifts it by 180 degrees to the apogee, in the tropical zodiac that most Western astrology uses. You can check every step in our calculation notes.

Do you need a birth time?

Usually not. Mean Lilith moves about 40 degrees a year, which works out to roughly nine months in each sign. On most birth dates the whole day falls inside one sign, so the date alone is enough.

A birth time matters only when Lilith was crossing from one sign into the next around your birthday. If that happened, the calculator tells you and asks for the time. The house Lilith falls in is a different matter: houses turn with Earth every day, so for the house you need an exact time and place with our free birth chart tool.

What does Lilith mean in astrology?

Astrologers read Lilith as the part of you that did not fit what others expected and learned to stay out of sight. Where the Moon in your chart shows how you look for comfort (your Moon sign covers that), Lilith points to what you stopped asking for. Four themes come up again and again:

  • The rejected: a trait or need that once drew disapproval, so you trimmed it back or hid it.
  • The untamed: something in you that does not want to be managed, polished or made convenient for others.
  • Boundaries: where you draw a hard line, and where you may have let one be crossed for too long.
  • Desire: what you want for its own sake, including wants that feel slightly embarrassing to say out loud.

None of this is a verdict on your character. Lilith is usually read as a sore spot that can turn into a source of strength once it gets some honest attention.

What does your Lilith sign mean?

The sign shows the style of that hidden, unruly part. Here is a one-line reading for each.

Black Moon Lilith in the twelve signs
Lilith signOften read as
AriesAnger and the urge to act first, once judged as too much
TaurusPleasure, comfort and owning things, with old guilt about wanting them
GeminiA sharp, restless mind and words you were told to hold back
CancerStrong needs for care and home, and a fear of being needy
LeoThe wish to be seen and admired without apology
VirgoExacting standards and a refusal to fake being fine
LibraA need for fairness and a quiet rebellion against keeping the peace
ScorpioIntensity, sexuality and secrets kept close
SagittariusFreedom, blunt truth and beliefs that do not follow the group
CapricornAmbition and authority, and discomfort with ever being ruled
AquariusBeing odd on purpose and pulling away from belonging
PiscesLonging, sensitivity and a pull toward escape

Your calculator result adds a longer reading for your sign. Read it as a set of questions, not as a description you have to agree with.

What does Lilith's house show?

If the sign describes how this part of you behaves, the house describes the area of life where it tends to show up. A few short examples:

  • 1st house: in how you present yourself and whether you dim it down.
  • 4th house: in family, home and what was allowed at the kitchen table.
  • 7th house: in close partnerships and what you will or will not accept.
  • 10th house: in career and public standing, often a push against bosses.
  • 12th house: in private habits and feelings that rarely get named.

Lilith's house needs your birth time and place. You can find it, along with every other planet, in a full birth chart.

How to read Lilith without fear

A lot of writing about Lilith leans on words like dark, dangerous or forbidden. That makes for good headlines, but it can leave people uneasy about a placement everyone has. Lilith is not a curse, and it does not predict trouble in love or anywhere else.

A calmer way in is to ask a few plain questions. What did I learn to hide when I was young? What do I want that I rarely admit? Where do I give in when I would rather hold firm? If the sign description helps you answer those, it has done its job. If it does not fit, set it aside; astrology describes tendencies, and you know your life better than any chart does.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is my Lilith sign?

It is the zodiac sign Black Moon Lilith was in when you were born. Type your birth date into the form at the top of this page to see it. Because Lilith stays in each sign for about nine months, many people born in the same season share it.

Why do Lilith calculators give different results?

Most often because they compute different Liliths. A tool that uses true or osculating Lilith can land a sign away from one that uses mean Lilith. Sidereal calculators also shift every result back by most of a sign. We use mean Lilith in the tropical zodiac.

Is Black Moon Lilith a real object?

No. It is a point in space defined by the Moon's orbit, the averaged spot where the Moon is farthest from Earth. The asteroid named Lilith is real, but it is a different thing.

Is Lilith part of traditional astrology?

No. It came into astrology in the 20th century. Hellenistic, medieval and Vedic astrology do not use it, so you will not find it in older texts.

Is a Lilith placement bad?

No placement is bad in itself. Lilith points to a sensitive theme, something you may have learned to hide or to fight for. Many astrologers see it as a place to grow more honest with yourself.

Does Lilith matter more for women?

Everyone has Lilith in their chart, whatever their gender. The myth is about a woman, but the themes of rejection, desire and drawing lines apply to anyone.

How long does Lilith stay in one sign?

Mean Lilith takes a little under nine years to go once around the zodiac, so it spends about nine months in each sign. True Lilith moves unevenly and can spend more or less time.

Can I find my Lilith sign without a birth time?

Yes, in almost every case. The time only matters if Lilith changed signs on or near your birth date. For Lilith's house, though, you need the exact time and place of birth.
