Birth Chart Reading: What a Good One Includes
A birth chart reading explains where the Sun, Moon and planets were at the moment you were born and what astrologers traditionally associate with those positions.
A useful reading starts with accurate calculations and then explains them in plain language. Here is what to expect, what we calculate and where a written reading has limits.
What a birth chart is
Your birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a map of the sky for one moment and one place: your birth. It records which zodiac sign each planet was in, which sign was rising on the eastern horizon and how the planets were angled to each other.
To draw it accurately you need three things: your date of birth, your time of birth and your place of birth. The date gives the planets. The time and place give the rising sign, the midheaven and the houses. Without a birth time, a chart can still show the planets in their signs, but the rising sign and the houses are unknown.
What a good reading should contain
Whoever writes it, a solid birth chart reading should cover the following. If a reading leaves out most of these, it is a horoscope for your Sun sign, not a reading of your chart.
- The big three: your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign, and how they work together.
- Every planet from Mercury to Pluto with its sign and, if your birth time is known, its house.
- The houses: which areas of life the chart emphasizes.
- The main aspects: the strongest angles between planets, such as a Sun-Moon square or a Venus-Jupiter trine.
- The lunar nodes and the midheaven, which astrologers often read as direction and public life.
- The actual positions in degrees, so you can check them against any other source.
What we calculate
Our calculators work out the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets for your exact birth moment, convert your local birth time to universal time with the historical time zone and daylight saving rules for your city, and compute your Ascendant, midheaven and Placidus houses. We have checked our results against published Swiss Ephemeris output for a set of reference charts, and the differences are far below anything that could change a sign or a house in practice.
If you do not know your birth time, we say so clearly. We calculate a chart for noon, leave out the rising sign and houses, and tell you if your Moon could be in a different sign depending on the hour.
You can see the details on our page about how we calculate.
What the paid reading contains
Our personal reading costs $29, paid once, with no subscription. It brings your birth chart and your numerology together in one document that you can read online and save as a PDF.
- Your big three, each explained on its own and in combination.
- All planets in their signs, and in their houses if your birth time is known.
- Your north node and midheaven.
- The key aspects in your chart, ordered by how exact they are.
- Your numerology core numbers and your personal year.
- Reflection questions to take into your own thinking or a conversation.
How the text is written
Every position is calculated before any text is written. The interpretation passages come from a library drafted with AI assistance and edited by us: one for each sign, each house, each planet in each sign and each aspect type. Your reading is assembled from the passages that match your chart.
An optional AI step can rewrite the assembled text so it reads smoothly, but it only receives the values we calculated and is instructed not to add or change any position. If a sentence in your reading names a sign or a degree, that sign or degree comes from the calculation.
A written reading versus a live astrologer
A live astrologer can do something our reading cannot: ask you questions back. They can hear what is going on in your life, notice what you skip over and follow up. If you want a conversation about a specific situation, book a session with a person.
What a written reading does well is cover the whole chart consistently, show every number it relies on and stay with you as a document you can come back to. It is also far less expensive than a live session. Many people use both: a written reading to understand the chart, and a conversation when they want to talk something through.
What a reading is not
Astrology is a symbolic tradition. Our readings are for entertainment and self-reflection. They do not predict events, and they are not medical, financial, legal or relationship advice.
