What Is My Life Path Number?
Your life path number is the main number in numerology: a single digit from 1 to 9, or the master number 11, 22 or 33, worked out from your full date of birth. Enter your date of birth and the calculator works out your life path number, showing every step of the math.
What a life path number is
In numerology, the life path number is the most important number you have. It comes from your full date of birth, and it is said to describe the general direction of your life: the themes you keep returning to, the lessons you meet more than once, and the way you tend to move through the world.
There are twelve possible results: the numbers 1 through 9 and the three master numbers 11, 22 and 33. Each one has its own character. A 1 is usually described as independent and driven, a 7 as reflective and searching, a 9 as broad-minded and generous.
How the life path calculator works
This life path calculator uses the method most numerologists teach. It reduces the month, the day and the year of your birth separately, then adds the three results together and reduces the total once more.
To reduce a number, you add its digits until you get a single digit. There is one exception: if you land on 11, 22 or 33 along the way, you stop there. These are master numbers, and they are kept as they are.
Here is an example for someone born on July 15, 1984. The month is 7. The day is 15, and 1 + 5 = 6. The year is 1984, and 1 + 9 + 8 + 4 = 22, which is a master number, so it stays 22. Then 7 + 6 + 22 = 35, and 3 + 5 = 8. The life path number is 8.
How the life path calculator works: rules and sources
Where numerologists disagree, we pick one rule and say which. These are the rules behind your number:
| Rule | Value we use | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Order of adding | Month, day and year reduced separately, then added and reduced | Widely taught convention; the flat digit sum gives a different number on 13.9% of dates from 1940 to 2009 (our count) |
| Master numbers | 11, 22 and 33 kept at every step | Numerology convention, no scientific basis either way |
| How common each number is | 1: 11.1%, 2: 4.6%, 3: 11.1%, 4: 8.1%, 5: 11.1%, 6: 10.2%, 7: 11.1%, 8: 11.1%, 9: 11.1%, 11: 6.5%, 22: 3.0%, 33: 0.9% | Our own count over all 25,568 dates from 1940 through 2009, see the life path pages |

Why the method matters
Some calculators simply add every digit of the birth date in one long row. Most of the time this gives the same answer. Occasionally it does not, because adding everything at once can skip over a master number that appears in the month, day or year.
Take April 29, 1969. Reducing the parts separately gives 4, 11 and 7, which adds up to 22, a master number. Adding all the digits in one row gives 40, which reduces to 4. We use the first method because it is the more common convention, and we show you the steps so you can see exactly where your number came from.
How to read your result
Your free result gives you your number, the arithmetic and a longer look at your strengths, your blind spots and how your number tends to show up in relationships and work, plus your birthday number and personal year.
If you have a master number, read the description of its base number as well: 11 relates to 2, 22 to 4 and 33 to 6. Many numerologists say master number people move between both.
If you want everything in one place, the personal reading for $29 combines your life path with your name numbers and your birth chart.
What the number can and cannot tell you
A life path number is a starting point for reflection, not a fixed label. Millions of people share each number, and they live very different lives. Read the description as a set of ideas to test against your own experience, and keep what is useful.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How do I know what my life path number is?
Enter your full date of birth in the calculator above. It reduces the month, day and year separately, adds them and reduces the total, keeping 11, 22 and 33. You will see your number and every step of the calculation.
What life path number am I?
That depends only on your birth date. Use the calculator at the top of this page to find out. It takes a few seconds and does not need your name or birth time.
What is the difference between a life path calculator and a numerology calculator?
A life path calculator uses only your birth date. A full numerology calculator also uses your birth name to find your expression, soul urge and personality numbers. You can find those with our numerology name calculator.
Are 11, 22 and 33 really life path numbers?
In most modern numerology, yes. They are called master numbers and are kept instead of reduced. Some numerologists reduce them to 2, 4 and 6. We keep them and mention the base number in your result.
Why does another calculator give me a different number?
Usually because it adds all the digits at once instead of reducing the month, day and year separately. The two methods agree most of the time but can differ when a master number is involved.
Can my life path number change?
No. It comes from your date of birth, so it stays the same for your whole life. Other numbers, like your personal year number, change over time.
