Numerology Calculator

From your birth name and birth date, this numerology calculator works out seven numbers: life path, expression, soul urge, personality, birthday, maturity and the personal year you are in now. Type your full name as it was registered at birth, then your birth date. Your numerology chart appears in two short steps.

Step 1 of 2

Your full birth name

As on your birth certificate, middle names included.

What does a numerology calculator do?

It turns two pieces of information into a set of numbers. Your birth date gives the life path, birthday and personal year numbers. Your full birth name gives the expression, soul urge and personality numbers. One more, the maturity number, combines the two sides. Together these seven make up what most books call a numerology chart.

The arithmetic is simple, but there is a lot of it, and one slip in a long name changes the result. A calculator does the adding for you and applies the same rules to every number.

The first part of your reading shows up right after you submit. The rest, a short reading for each number, opens after you leave a first name and an email address, which is also where the link back to your chart goes.

What are the core numbers in a chart?

Each number answers a different question. The table shows where each one comes from and the area of life it is traditionally linked with.

The seven numbers in your numerology chart
NumberMade fromWhat it describes
Life pathFull birth dateThe main direction and recurring lessons of your life
Expression (destiny)Every letter of your full birth nameYour natural abilities and how you go about tasks
Soul urgeThe vowels of your birth nameWhat you want most, often privately
PersonalityThe consonants of your birth nameThe first impression you give people
BirthdayThe day of the month you were bornOne extra gift or skill that colors the rest
MaturityLife path plus expressionThemes said to grow stronger in the second half of life
Personal yearBirth month and day plus the current yearThe tone of the year you are in now, on a nine-year cycle

A note on names: many numerology books call the expression number the destiny number. Both labels mean the same sum of all letters, so if a friend mentions a destiny number of 8 and you have an expression of 8, you are looking at the same thing.

How is each number calculated?

All seven follow one basic move: add digits until a single digit is left, unless you hit 11, 22 or 33, which stay as they are. Letters get their values from the Pythagorean table, which counts through the alphabet in runs of nine: A is 1, I is 9, J starts again at 1, and Z ends on 8.

  • Life path: bring the birth month, birth day and birth year down to one digit each (or a master number), add those three, then reduce the sum.
  • Expression: add the letter values of each part of your full birth name, reduce each part, add the parts and reduce again.
  • Soul urge: the same steps using only vowels. Y counts as a vowel when it acts as one, which we take to mean it does not touch another vowel.
  • Personality: the same steps using only consonants.
  • Birthday: the day of the month, reduced. A birthday on the 11th or 22nd keeps its master number.
  • Maturity: your life path plus your expression number, reduced.
  • Personal year: reduced birth month plus reduced birth day plus the digit sum of the current calendar year, reduced. Our calculator switches to the new personal year on January 1.

If you only want one piece, the single calculators show the full working for each: the birth date calculator for the life path alone, the name calculator for the three letter-based numbers, and the soul urge calculator with a vowel-by-vowel breakdown.

Worked example: Nora Jean Whitaker

Here is a full chart for a made-up person, Nora Jean Whitaker, born November 14, 1987, worked out for 2026. You can follow each line with a pencil and land on the same numbers our calculator gives.

  • Life path: the month 11 is a master number, so it stays 11. The day 14 becomes 1 + 4 = 5. The year 1987 becomes 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25, then 7. Adding 11 + 5 + 7 gives 23, and 2 + 3 = 5. Life path 5.
  • Expression: NORA is 5 + 6 + 9 + 1 = 21, which reduces to 3. JEAN is 1 + 5 + 1 + 5 = 12, also 3. WHITAKER is 5 + 8 + 9 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 5 + 9 = 41, which reduces to 5. Then 3 + 3 + 5 = 11, a master number, so it is kept. Expression 11.
  • Soul urge: the vowels O and A in Nora make 7. E and A in Jean make 6. I, A and E in Whitaker make 15, then 6. So 7 + 6 + 6 = 19, then 10, then 1. Soul urge 1.
  • Personality: the consonants N and R in Nora make 14, then 5. J and N in Jean make 6. W, H, T, K and R in Whitaker make 26, then 8. So 5 + 6 + 8 = 19, which also ends at 1. Personality 1.
  • Birthday: the 14th reduces to 5.
  • Maturity: life path 5 plus expression 11 is 16, and 1 + 6 = 7. Maturity 7.
  • Personal year 2026: month 11 stays 11, the day gives 5, and 2026 sums to 10, then 1. That makes 11 + 5 + 1 = 17, then 8. Personal year 8.

Two things stand out. The master number 11 appears twice, in the birth month and as her expression number. And her soul urge and personality match, often read as inner wishes and outward manner pointing the same way. Her life path page would be life path 5.

Which number matters most?

Most numerologists put the life path first. It is fixed from the day you are born, it does not depend on spelling, and it is the number the rest of the chart is usually read against. The expression number tends to come second, because it uses the whole name.

Still, the interesting part of a chart is usually the relationship between numbers, not any one of them. A soul urge that differs sharply from the personality number can explain why people misjudge you at first. The personal year is the only number that changes, so it is the one people check every January.

Pythagorean or Chaldean numerology?

These are the two letter systems you will run into most often, and they can give the same name quite different totals. We use the Pythagorean system because it is the standard in Western numerology books and in most US calculators. Neither has been shown to be more accurate; they are simply different traditions.

How the two systems differ
PythagoreanChaldean
Letter valuesAlphabet order: A = 1 through I = 9, then repeatBased on the sound of each letter, values 1 to 8
The number 9Used for I and RNot given to any letter

Where you meet itMost Western books and calculatorsOlder texts and many Indian numerology sites

If another site gives you a different expression number, check which system it uses before anything else. Our rules are listed on how we calculate.

What are master numbers?

The numbers 11, 22 and 33 are called master numbers, and most modern numerologists leave them unreduced. They are read as stronger, more demanding versions of their base digits: 11 builds on 2, 22 on 4, and 33 on 6. People with a master number are often told to read the base number's description as well.

Our calculator keeps master numbers at every step, which is why the month 11 in the example above was not cut down to 2. Reducing it early would have changed the result.

What can numerology tell you, and what not?

Numerology offers a vocabulary for thinking about yourself: themes, strengths, habits worth questioning. That can be useful when you read slowly and test each statement against your own life. It cannot predict events, it is not a science, and nothing in a chart is advice about your health, money or legal matters.

Two people with the same numbers can live very different lives. If you want your numbers read together with your birth chart in one document, the personal reading for $29 covers both.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is my numerology number?

Most people mean their life path number, which comes from the full birth date. A complete chart has six more numbers from your name and birthday. Enter both in the calculator above to see all seven at once.

Is the destiny number the same as the expression number?

Yes. Destiny number and expression number are two names for one calculation: every letter of the full birth name added up, then brought down to one digit unless the total is 11, 22 or 33.

What is a personality number in numerology?

It is the sum of the consonants in your full birth name. Numerologists read it as the outer layer people notice first, before they know you well.

How do I find my personal year number?

Add your reduced birth month, your reduced birth day and the reduced digits of the current year, then reduce the total. Our calculator does this for the current calendar year, starting each new one on January 1.

Can I use a numerology calculator with just my date of birth?

Partly. The date alone gives your life path, birthday and personal year numbers. The expression, soul urge, personality and maturity numbers need your full birth name.

Should I enter my married name or my birth name?

Use your full birth name, middle names included, for the classic chart. You can run your current name separately and compare the two.

Why do numerology calculators give different results?

Three reasons cover most cases: Chaldean instead of Pythagorean letter values, a different rule for the letter Y, or adding all digits in one row instead of reducing each part first.

Is this numerology calculator free?

Yes. The chart and part of the reading are free right away. To read a few lines about each number, add your first name and email. Only the personal reading costs money.
