7th House Astrology: The House of Partnership
The 7th house is the house of partnership in astrology: it describes committed relationships, marriage, close business partners and the qualities you look for in others.
Find your 7th house
Step 1 of 2
In astrology, the 7th house covers one-on-one relationships: romantic partners, spouses, business partners and even open rivals. It begins at the descendant, the point directly opposite your rising sign, so its sign depends on your exact birth time and place. Below you can calculate your 7th house sign, see any planets in it and read what the tradition associates with each.
What does the 7th house represent?
The twelve houses of a birth chart divide life into areas, and the 7th house is the area of the other person. Where the 1st house describes how you meet the world on your own, the 7th describes what happens when you commit to someone: a partner, a spouse, a co-founder, a close collaborator.
Traditional texts also list contracts and open enemies under the 7th house. The common thread is a relationship between two equals who face each other directly. That is why astrologers call it the house of partnership rather than the house of love. Romance as play and attraction belongs more to the 5th house, while the 7th is about commitment and shared terms.
Many astrologers also read the 7th house as the qualities you seek in others, sometimes because they are qualities you have not fully claimed in yourself yet. Seen this way, partners can work like a mirror.
How do I find my 7th house?
You need your birth date, your exact birth time and your place of birth. From those, the chart calculates your ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. The descendant is exactly opposite, 180 degrees away, and that is where the 7th house begins.
The calculator on this page does all of this for you. It shows your descendant sign, the cusp of your 7th house in the Placidus system, every planet that falls inside the 7th house and the planet that rules your descendant sign, together with the house that ruling planet sits in.
Without a birth time, the 7th house cannot be calculated. The ascendant moves through all twelve signs in about a day, so even a two-hour difference can change the sign. If you only know your date, you can still compare charts with a partner using our birth chart compatibility calculator, which works without times.
Descendant and 7th house: are they the same?
Almost. The descendant is a single point, the western horizon at your birth. In most house systems, including Placidus, that point is also the cusp, or starting line, of the 7th house. The house then extends from the descendant to the cusp of the 8th house.
In Whole Sign houses, which we use only for births above the polar circles, the 7th house is the entire sign opposite your rising sign. In that case the descendant may sit somewhere inside the 7th house rather than at its start. For most people in the United States, the descendant sign and the 7th house sign are the same.
What does the sign on my 7th house mean?
The sign on the descendant is read as the style of partnership you are drawn to, and often the kind of person you attract. Because the descendant is always opposite the ascendant, it tends to describe qualities that balance your own first impression.
A few examples show the pattern. With Aries rising, the descendant is in Libra: someone who leads with independence may look for fairness and calm in a partner. With Leo rising, the descendant is in Aquarius: a warm, visible person may be drawn to someone cooler and more independent. With Virgo rising, the descendant is in Pisces: a careful, practical person may find themselves drawn to someone dreamy and compassionate.
These are tendencies that astrologers describe, not rules about who you will love. Your calculator result gives a short reading for your own descendant sign.
What do planets in the 7th house mean?
Many people have no planets in the 7th house at all. That is normal and does not mean relationships are unimportant. It means the sign on the cusp and the planet that rules it carry the story. When a planet does sit in the 7th, astrologers read it as a strong flavor in your partnerships.
| Planet | Traditional theme in partnership |
|---|---|
| Sun | Partnership close to the center of life, knowing yourself through others |
| Moon | Emotional security tied to sharing daily life |
| Mercury | Talk, plans and shared ideas as the glue |
| Venus | Charm, harmony and a friendly placement for relationships |
| Mars | Energy, passion and learning to handle disagreement openly |
| Jupiter | Growth through others and a generous approach |
| Saturn | Serious commitment that deepens slowly over time |
| Uranus | Freedom, surprise and unconventional arrangements |
| Neptune | Idealism and compassion, with a need for clear eyes |
| Pluto | Intensity, trust and relationships that change you |
How the 7th house calculator works: rules and sources
The 7th house needs an exact birth time and place, because it starts at the descendant, which turns through all twelve signs in about a day. These are the rules the calculator uses:
| Rule | Value we use | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Descendant | Exactly opposite the ascendant (plus 180 degrees) | Geometry of the chart, true in every house system |
| House system | Placidus; Whole Sign houses above the polar circles | The most common choice in modern Western astrology; Placidus cannot be drawn for every degree near the poles |
| Ascendant and positions | Local sidereal time, true obliquity; planets from astronomy-engine | Checked against Swiss Ephemeris output from Astrodienst: ascendant within 0.7 arcseconds in 7 reference charts (astro.com/swisseph, checked October 12, 2026) |
| Birth time | Converted with the IANA time zone database, historical daylight saving included | iana.org/time-zones, checked October 12, 2026 |
| Ruler of the 7th | Modern ruler, with the traditional ruler shown where they differ | Astrological convention; Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces have two rulers |
| Meaning of the sign and planets | Summarized from astrological tradition, drafted with AI assistance and edited by us | Tradition, not research |
What is the ruler of the 7th house?
Each sign has a ruling planet. The ruler of your 7th house is the planet that rules your descendant sign: Venus for Libra or Taurus, Mars for Aries, Saturn for Capricorn, and so on. Modern astrology gives Scorpio to Pluto, Aquarius to Uranus and Pisces to Neptune, while traditional astrology gives them to Mars, Saturn and Jupiter.
Astrologers look at where that ruling planet sits in your chart. If the ruler of your 7th house is in your 10th house, partnership and career may be linked, for example through working with a partner. If it sits in the 4th house, relationships may be closely tied to home and family. The calculator shows the house of your 7th house ruler so you can read this link yourself.
The 7th house in synastry
When two charts are compared, astrologers pay special attention to planets of one person that fall in the other person's 7th house. If your partner's Sun or Venus lands in your 7th house, the tradition reads it as a sense that this person fits the role of partner for you.

A note on what astrology can say about relationships
Astrology offers a language for talking about what you value in a partner and how you tend to show up in close relationships. It does not decide whether a relationship will last, and it cannot replace honest conversation with the person in question. Please read everything here for entertainment and self-reflection.
