Your name numbers come from the letters of your full birth name: the expression number uses every letter, the soul urge number the vowels and the personality number the consonants. Enter your full name as it appears on your birth certificate to see your expression, soul urge and personality numbers.

What your name says in numerology

Your birth date gives you your life path number. Your name gives you three more. In numerology, every letter has a value, and the totals of those values are said to describe different sides of who you are.

The expression number, also called the destiny number, uses every letter of your name. It is linked with your natural talents and the way you tend to work. The soul urge number, sometimes called the heart's desire, uses only the vowels and points to what you want deep down. The personality number uses only the consonants and describes the impression you tend to make on people who do not know you well yet.

How the calculation works

We use the Pythagorean letter table, which is the standard in most Western numerology. The letters of the alphabet are numbered 1 through 9 and then start again: A, J and S are 1, B, K and T are 2, and so on up to I and R, which are 9.

Each part of your name is added up and reduced on its own, then the parts are added together and reduced again. Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept at every step. Accents are removed, so José counts as Jose, and hyphens and apostrophes are ignored.

The letter Y can be a vowel or a consonant. We count it as a vowel when it does not sit next to another vowel, as in Mary or Lynn, and as a consonant when it does, as in Maya or Yolanda. This is one common rule, and numerologists do not all agree on it.

How the name calculator works: rules and sources

Where numerologists disagree, we pick one rule and say which. These are the rules behind your number:

Which name to use

Traditional numerology uses your full name at birth, including middle names, because that is the name you started with. If you changed your name through marriage or choice, you can calculate that name too and compare. Many people find that the newer name describes the person they have become, while the birth name describes where they began.

Reading your three name numbers

Look at the three numbers together. When they are similar, people often feel that how they look from outside matches how they feel inside. When they differ, for example a quiet 7 soul urge behind an outgoing 3 personality, that gap can explain why others sometimes misread you.

Your free result shows all three numbers, a letter-by-letter breakdown and a longer description of each number. If you want your name numbers read together with your life path and birth chart, the personal reading for $29 covers all of it.

Limits

Name numerology is a tradition built on a letter table that was designed for the Latin alphabet. Names written in other scripts have to be transliterated, and different spellings give different results. Use your numbers as prompts for reflection, not as facts about you.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is name numerology?

It is the part of numerology that gives each letter a number and adds them up to describe different sides of your personality. The three main name numbers are expression, soul urge and personality.

Is the expression number the same as the destiny number?

Yes. Both terms describe the total of all the letters in your full birth name. Different books use different names for it.

Should I use my birth name or my current name?

Traditional numerology uses your full birth name. You can also calculate your current name and compare the two. Many people find both interesting for different reasons.

Does the letter Y count as a vowel?

Sometimes. We count Y as a vowel when it does not touch another vowel, and as a consonant when it does. This is a common rule, but not every numerologist uses it.

Do I need to include my middle name?

Yes, if it is part of your birth name. Leaving it out changes the totals and gives you a different result.

What is a numerology chart?

A numerology chart usually means all your core numbers together: life path, expression, soul urge, personality and birthday number. This calculator gives you the name numbers. Add your birth date in the life path calculator to complete the set.
