Moon Sign Calculator
Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born, and astrology links it to your emotional needs. Enter your birth date, and if you know them, your birth time and place. The calculator finds where the Moon was when you were born.
Step 1 of 2
What your moon sign is
Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born. In astrology, the Sun describes your core identity and what you are working toward, while the Moon describes your emotional life: what you need to feel safe, how you react when something touches you, and what comforts you when the day has been hard.
Many people find that their moon sign explains things their sun sign does not. A Leo with a Cancer moon, for example, may be warm and visible in public but need a lot of quiet time at home to feel like themselves again.
How we find out your moon sign
We calculate the Moon's actual position for your birth moment using astronomy-engine, an open-source astronomy library. The result is given in the tropical zodiac, which is the standard in Western astrology, along with the exact degree.
Your birth time is converted to universal time using the time zone history of your birthplace, including the daylight saving rules in effect at the time. This matters, because a mistake of one hour moves the Moon by about half a degree.
How the moon sign calculator works: rules and sources
Where astrologers disagree, we pick one rule and say which. These are the rules behind your result:
| Rule | Value we use | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Moon position | astronomy-engine, apparent geocentric, tropical zodiac | Open source library by Don Cross, MIT license; checked against Swiss Ephemeris: Moon within 1.0 arcsecond in 7 reference charts |
| Unknown birth time | Chart for 12:00 noon; we check whether the Moon changed sign that day | Our convention: the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day |
| Time zone | IANA time zone database, historical daylight saving included | iana.org/time-zones, checked October 12, 2026 |
| Birthplace | Bundled list of about 3,000 cities with coordinates | GeoNames, CC BY 4.0 |
Why the birth time matters for the Moon
The Moon moves fast. It spends only about two and a half days in each sign and covers around 12 to 15 degrees a day. If it changed signs on the day you were born, your moon sign depends on the hour.
If you do not know your birth time, we calculate a noon chart and check whether the Moon was in the same sign for the whole day. If it was, your moon sign is certain. If it changed signs, we tell you both possibilities and suggest reading both descriptions to see which one feels closer.

Limits
The position of the Moon is a measurable fact. What it means for your emotional life is an astrological interpretation, not a psychological assessment. If something in your result feels important, treat it as a question to think about rather than an answer.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out my moon sign?
Enter your birth date, and ideally your birth time and place, into the calculator above. It calculates where the Moon was at that moment and shows you the sign and exact degree.
Can I find my moon sign without my birth time?
Often, yes. The Moon stays in one sign for about two and a half days, so on most dates it does not change. If it did change signs on your birthday, we show you both possible signs.
What is the difference between a sun sign and a moon sign?
Your sun sign is where the Sun was when you were born and describes your core identity. Your moon sign is where the Moon was and describes your emotional needs and reactions.
Why is my moon sign different on another website?
Usually because of the birth time or the time zone. If the Moon changed signs on your birthday, a different time or a wrong daylight saving setting can move it into the neighboring sign.
Which zodiac do you use?
The tropical zodiac, which is standard in Western astrology. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which gives a different sign for most people.
What are my big three?
Your big three are your sun, moon and rising signs. You can find all three at once with our big three calculator.
