4th House Astrology: The Meaning of Home and Roots

The 4th house in astrology describes home, family, ancestry and your private inner life, the base you come from and the place you go back to.

Step 1 of 2

When were you born?

Date of birth

The 4th house is the house of home and roots. It covers the family you grew up in, the home you make as an adult and the private self that few people get to see. It begins at the IC, the lowest point of the chart, and below are the areas of life it covers, what tradition says about planets placed there, a table of cusp signs and a note on which parent it describes.

What does the 4th house mean?

Imagine the chart as the sky around your place of birth. The 10th house sits up near the top, where the Sun stands at noon. The 4th house lies at the very bottom, under the earth, where the Sun is at midnight. Astrologers read that position literally: the 4th house is what lies underneath you, your foundation.

Its themes reach in two directions. Backward, it points to family history, ancestry and the atmosphere of your childhood home. Forward, it describes the home you build, the kind of place where you feel safe and the way you live when no one is watching. Traditional texts also tied it to land, property and the end of life, which they called the end of the matter.

Cancer is the natural sign of the 4th house and the Moon its natural ruler. It is angular, one of the four strongest houses, which is why a planet sitting here often colors a person's whole private life. The fact box above shows these points at a glance.

Which life areas belong to the 4th house?

The 4th house holds the parts of life that happen behind your own front door, plus the history that came before you.

  • Home: where and how you live, and what makes a place feel like yours.
  • Family of origin: the household you grew up in and its mood.
  • Ancestry and heritage: family stories, traditions and where your people come from.
  • One parent: often the one who shaped home life most (see the section below).
  • Private life: the self you show only to the people closest to you.
  • Real estate and land: houses, apartments and the ground under them, as a theme.
  • Later life: what tradition called the conclusion of things, read today as how you settle down.

What do planets in the 4th house mean?

Astrologers read a planet in the 4th house as a strong note in your home life and inner world. Because the house is hidden at the bottom of the chart, these traits can be strong yet hard for outsiders to see. The usual readings, as tendencies:

  • Sun: identity rooted in family and home; you may come into your own later in life.
  • Moon: deep attachment to home, at ease in the house of its own sign.
  • Mercury: a lively, talkative household, or a home that doubles as a workspace.
  • Venus: a love of a pretty, peaceful home and usually fond memories of it.
  • Mars: an energetic or tense home atmosphere and a strong urge to defend your space.
  • Jupiter: a roomy, welcoming home and a generous family spirit.
  • Saturn: responsibility at home from an early age and a slow build toward security.
  • Uranus: frequent moves or an unusual family setup, and a need for freedom at home.
  • Neptune: an idealized or hazy picture of family, and a home that feels like a retreat.
  • Pluto: strong family bonds with old patterns that ask to be faced and changed.

The IC and the sign on the 4th house cusp

In Placidus and other quadrant systems, the 4th house begins at the IC, short for Imum Coeli, Latin for the lowest part of the sky. It is the point directly opposite the Midheaven. The sign there describes your emotional base and the kind of home you are drawn to.

Sign on the IC or 4th house cusp, in brief
Sign on the cuspWhat home tends to look like
AriesA busy home with strong wills and a lot of activity
TaurusA comfortable, settled home with good food and few moves
GeminiA noisy, chatty home full of books, visitors and change
CancerA close, protective home that is the center of life
LeoA proud home that likes to host and to be admired
VirgoAn orderly home with routines and plenty of chores
LibraA pleasant, well-decorated home that avoids open conflict
ScorpioA private home with deep loyalties and things left unsaid
SagittariusA home open to guests, ideas and possibly other countries
CapricornA structured home with clear rules and high expectations
AquariusAn unconventional home that values independence
PiscesA soft, porous home where moods spread from person to person

In whole sign houses the 4th house is the fourth sign from your rising sign, and the IC may fall in the 3rd or 5th house instead. That is one reason two charts of the same person can look different between systems.

Which parent does the 4th house show?

This is an old argument. Many modern astrologers give the 4th house to the mother, because of its link to Cancer and the Moon. Others give it to the father, following several traditional authors who assigned the father to the 4th and the mother to the 10th.

A common middle position reads the 4th as the parent who was more present at home and more involved in daily care, whoever that was. That fits families of every shape better than a fixed rule. Read the 4th and 10th together and see which description matches your own history.

What if my 4th house is empty?

An empty 4th house does not mean a cold childhood or a lack of interest in home. The IC is still there, its sign still describes your roots, and the ruler of that sign still sits somewhere in the chart.

Follow that ruler. With Leo on the IC, the Sun rules your 4th house, and its house tells you where home and family feelings tend to play out. The Sun in the 11th could suggest friends who feel like family, or a home that is always full of your circle.

How do I find my 4th house?

Enter your birth details in the birth chart calculator above. It marks the IC, shows the sign on your 4th house cusp and lists any planets inside it. It uses Placidus, a widely used system in Western astrology.

Because the IC moves with the Ascendant, the birth time has to be exact, ideally to the minute from a birth record. A one-hour error can change the sign on the IC. Your Moon sign, which tradition links to this house, is far less sensitive and works with a rough time.

Opposite the 4th lies the 10th house of career and public life. The two form the vertical axis of the chart, private roots below and public reach above. The next house in order is the 5th house, where the safety of home turns into play.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What does the 4th house represent in astrology?

Home, family, ancestry, your private life and the emotional base you return to. Traditionally it also covers property and the later part of life.

Is the 4th house the mother or the father?

Astrologers disagree. Modern practice often gives it to the mother, older texts often to the father. Many now read it as the parent who was most present at home.

What is the IC in astrology?

The Imum Coeli, the lowest point of the chart and opposite the Midheaven. In Placidus and other quadrant systems it is the cusp of the 4th house.

What does the Moon in the 4th house mean?

The Moon rules Cancer, the natural sign of this house, so tradition sees it as comfortable here. It points to a deep need for a secure home and a strong tie to family.

What does an empty 4th house mean?

Nothing negative. Read the sign on the IC and the house where its ruling planet sits to see how home and family show up for you.

What is the difference between the 4th and 10th house?

The 4th is private life, home and roots. The 10th is public life, career and reputation. Together they form the vertical axis of the chart.

Can I find my 4th house without a birth time?

No. The IC moves into a new sign every couple of hours on average, so the house can only be calculated with an exact time and place of birth.
