What a personal year number is

In numerology, your personal year number describes the mood of one year of your life. Your life path number stays the same forever. Your personal year number changes every year, so it is the number people look up in late December and early January.

We count each personal year from January 1 to December 31. The numbers move through a cycle of nine years: a 1 year is often read as a time to start something, a 5 year as a time of change, and a 9 year as a time to finish and let go before the next 1 begins.

Sometimes the total lands on 11, 22 or 33. These are called master years. Numerologists read them as a stronger version of 2, 4 and 6: an 11 year carries the themes of a 2 year, a 22 year those of a 4 year, and a 33 year those of a 6 year.

How the personal year calculator works

The calculator needs only your birth month and birth day. Your birth year does not count. It brings the month, the day and the year you are asking about down to one digit each, then adds them up.

To bring a number down to one digit, you add its digits until one digit is left. There is one exception: if you land on 11, 22 or 33, you stop there, because these are master numbers.

Here is an example for someone born on July 15. The month is 7. The day is 15, and 1 + 5 = 6. The year 2027 gives 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11, a master number, so it stays 11. Then 7 + 6 + 11 = 24, and 2 + 4 = 6. For this person, 2027 is a personal year 6.

The same birthday in 2026 gives 7 + 6 + 1 = 14, and 1 + 4 = 5. In 2028 it gives 7 + 6 + 3 = 16, and 1 + 6 = 7. That is the cycle at work: most years move you one step further.

How the personal year calculator works: rules and sources

Where numerologists disagree, we pick one rule and say which. These are the rules behind your number:

Personal years 1 to 9 at a glance

Each personal year has its own theme. The master years 11, 22 and 33 are listed after the nine, each with the number it builds on.

How to read your result

Your result shows your personal year number for 2027, what that year is often read as, one practical focus and one question to take into the year. You also see the math, so you can check every step yourself.

Use the buttons in your result to look at 2026 and 2028 too. Many people find it helpful to read the year they are finishing next to the one that is coming, since the cycle builds from one year to the next.

If you have a master year, read the meaning of its base year as well: 11 relates to 2, 22 to 4 and 33 to 6. If you want your personal year next to your birth chart and the year's main dates, the year ahead reading puts it all in one place.

What a personal year can and cannot tell you

A personal year number is a way to think about the year ahead, not a forecast. It cannot tell you what will happen, and it is not advice about health, money or legal matters.

What it can do is give you a theme to test against your own life. If your year is a 4, you might ask which routine deserves more care. If it is a 9, you might ask what you are ready to finish. Keep what is useful and let the rest go.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my personal year number?

Bring your birth month, your birth day and the year you want down to a single digit each by adding their digits. Keep 11, 22 and 33 as they are. Add the three, then bring the total down the same way. Born July 15, for 2027: 7 + 6 + 11 = 24, and 2 + 4 = 6.

What personal year am I in 2027?

That depends on your birth month and day. Enter your date of birth in the calculator at the top of this page. It shows your personal year for 2027 with every step, and you can switch to 2026 or 2028.

Does the personal year start on my birthday or January 1?

We use January 1, the most common convention, so your personal year runs with the calendar year. Some numerologists start it on your birthday instead. In that view, your 2027 personal year begins on your birthday in 2027.

What is a personal year 1?

A personal year 1 is the first year of a new nine-year cycle. It is often read as a year for fresh starts and clear decisions, a good time to begin something that is your own.

What is a personal year 9?

A personal year 9 is the last year of the nine-year cycle. It tends to be read as a year to finish, clear out and forgive, so there is room for the new start of the personal year 1 that follows.

Is 11 a personal year?

Yes. In most modern numerology, 11 is kept as a master year instead of being turned into 2. An 11 year is read as a 2 year at a higher intensity: more intuition, more sensitivity. Some numerologists simply count it as a 2.

Is my personal year number the same as my life path number?

No. Your life path number comes from your full date of birth and never changes. Your personal year number uses only your birth month and day plus the current year, so it changes every January 1.
