How October splits between two signs
Libra has been running since the September equinox and holds most of October. Scorpio picks up in the last nine days or so and stays until late November. If your birthday is between October 1 and 20, you are a Libra in any year; from October 25 to 31, you are a Scorpio in any year.
The shift is a big one. Libra is air: social, light on its feet, interested in what is fair. Scorpio is water: private, intense, interested in what is true underneath. October birthdays end up on either side of that line.

The Libra weeks
Libra is Venus's air sign, so astrology ties it to beauty, manners and relationships. October Libras are usually described as charming hosts and fair-minded friends who can see an argument from both sides, sometimes so well that they find it hard to pick one.

The Scorpio days
Scorpio was traditionally ruled by Mars, and modern astrologers add Pluto. Together they give the sign its reputation for depth, focus and a will that does not bend easily. Late-October Scorpios tend to trust slowly and commit completely.

Is there a Libra-Scorpio cusp?
In popular astrology, yes: birthdays around October 19 to 25 are often grouped as the "cusp of drama and criticism", a name from a widely read birthday book. Traditional astrology does not recognize cusp signs, though. The Sun is in Libra up to a precise minute and in Scorpio from then on.
It is perfectly normal to recognize yourself in both signs. Most charts mix several signs, and a Libra Sun with Scorpio placements elsewhere will feel a pull in both directions. That has nothing to do with sitting on a border.
Birth date versus birth time
The change from Libra to Scorpio does not hit the same hour every October. It slips later by several hours from one year to the next and snaps back after each leap year, which is why it moves between the 22nd and the 23rd.
So if your birthday is October 22 or 23, the date on your birth certificate is not enough. The time printed next to it, and the place where you were born, decide your sign. A few practical points:
- Hospital times are often rounded to the nearest five or fifteen minutes, close enough for this purpose in almost every case
- The table shows US Eastern time; convert it if you were born in another zone
- If no birth time is known, assume the sign that covers most of that day in your year
Even a rough time helps. Knowing only that you were born in the morning or late at night is often enough to rule one sign out.
Venus hands over to Mars
October's two signs are ruled by the two planets astrology treats as a matched pair. Venus, ruler of Libra, stands for attraction, pleasure and agreement. Mars, the traditional ruler of Scorpio, stands for desire, drive and conflict. In the middle of the fall, the month goes from one to the other.
The pairing runs deeper in the classical rules. Each planet is said to be in detriment in a sign the other rules: Mars is weak in Libra, and Venus is weak in Scorpio. That is one way astrologers explain why Libra prefers to smooth a conflict over and Scorpio prefers to see it through to the end.
