September Zodiac Sign: Virgo or Libra?
September is shared by Virgo and Libra: Virgo until around September 22, and Libra from the equinox on about September 22 or 23.
Born in September? Check your sign
A September birthday makes you a Virgo if it falls in the first three weeks and a Libra if it falls in the last week or so. The switch happens at the September equinox, around the 22nd or 23rd, and the precise switch for 2026 and 2027 sits in the table near the top. Here is what each sign is about and how to tell which one is yours.
| Year | Libra starts (US Eastern) |
|---|---|
| 2026 | September 22, 8:06 PM EDT |
| 2027 | September 23, 2:01 AM EDT |
Calculated from the Sun's position, rounded to the nearest minute (official almanacs can differ by one minute). Born before that moment: Virgo. Born at or after it: Libra. All years on zodiac sign dates.
Virgo or Libra: when does September switch?
Virgo began in late August and covers September up to about the 22nd. Libra starts at the September equinox and carries on until late October. Few months tie their sign change so neatly to an event in the sky: the moment the Sun enters Libra is the moment of the equinox itself.
That link is deliberate. The tropical zodiac used in Western astrology measures the signs from the March equinox, so the four seasons begin as the Sun enters Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. In the Northern Hemisphere, Libra marks the first day of fall.
| Sign | In September | Element | Mode | Ruler |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Virgo | September 1 to about September 22 | Earth | Mutable | Mercury |
| Libra | About September 22 or 23 to September 30 | Air | Cardinal | Venus |
Born in early September: Virgo
Mercury's earth sign, Virgo, is the one astrologers connect with precision, service and a practical mind. September Virgos tend to notice the typo, the loose thread and the step nobody else planned for, and they usually fix it without making a fuss.
Being a mutable sign, Virgo adapts well and likes to improve what already exists. The common trap is worry: a mind built to spot problems does not always switch off. More on the sign at Virgo.
September Virgos are also known for showing affection through actions rather than speeches. They are the friend who drives you to the airport at 5 a.m. or quietly fixes the leaking faucet. Praise can make them uneasy, but being needed rarely does.
Born in late September: Libra
Libra is ruled by Venus, and its emblem, the scales, stands out as the one zodiac picture without a living being in it. Astrologers link it with fairness, good taste, diplomacy and a strong pull toward partnership.
As a cardinal air sign, Libra likes to start conversations and bring people together. The classic weakness is indecision, since weighing every side takes time, and a habit of smoothing things over even when it costs Libra something. The Libra page has the full profile.
Late-September Libras often notice what is missing from a room before anything else: a chair out of place, a guest left out of the conversation.
The Virgo-Libra cusp, honestly
Many websites describe September 19 to 25 as a cusp week with its own blended personality, sometimes called the "cusp of beauty". That label comes from popular birthday books of recent decades. Classical astrology has no such category.
The Sun leaves Virgo and enters Libra at one exact minute. Before that minute you are a Virgo, after it a Libra, and there is no overlap. If you were born on September 22 or 23, your birth time and birthplace are what decide it.

- Born September 21 to 24: check the exact time in the table
- Born September 25 to 30: Libra in every year
Why the equinox date shifts
Because the Libra switch is the equinox, you can see the drift in any almanac: the September equinox falls on the 22nd in some years and on the 23rd in others. The calendar year is a few hours shorter than the Sun's actual cycle, and leap years correct the gap only every fourth year, so the moment wanders back and forth.
Where you were born matters too. An equinox that comes at 11 p.m. in California has already passed midnight on the East Coast and is mid-morning in Europe. The table gives Eastern time, so convert it if you were born elsewhere.
One more note for readers south of the equator: the signs keep the same dates in Australia or Argentina, even though September brings spring there. The zodiac follows the Sun's position, not the local season.
Early, middle or late Virgo: the decans
Some astrologers split every sign into three decans of 10 degrees each, roughly ten days apiece. In the system most common in modern Western books, each decan borrows a flavor from a sign of the same element. September opens at the tail end of the first Virgo decan, then holds the second and third Virgo decans and the first Libra decan:
- Virgo, second decan (early September to mid-September): colored by Capricorn and Saturn, often read as the most disciplined Virgo
- Virgo, third decan (mid-September to the equinox): colored by Taurus and Venus, often read as the gentlest and most comfort-loving Virgo
- Libra, first decan (the equinox to the end of the month): pure Libra, ruled by Venus twice over
Decans are an older layer of astrology, but several systems exist and they disagree on details. Treat them as a nuance, not as a second Sun sign.
Beyond your Sun sign
Plenty of Virgos feel more like Libras and the other way around, and the reason is usually elsewhere in the chart. Your Moon sign shapes your feelings and comfort zone; your rising sign shapes the way you come across. A Virgo with a Libra Moon, for instance, may care about harmony as much as about getting things right.

September's birthstone and flowers
The September birthstone is the sapphire, best known in blue. The month's birth flowers are usually given as the aster and the morning glory.
These are customs from the jewelry trade and old flower lore, not astrology, and they do not change with your sign. A Virgo born on September 5 and a Libra born on September 28 share the same stone.
