Zodiac signs by month
January Zodiac Sign: Capricorn or Aquarius?
January belongs to two signs: Capricorn until around the 19th or 20th, then Aquarius for the rest of the month.
Born in January? Check your sign
If you were born in January, your Sun sign is either Capricorn or Aquarius. Capricorn holds roughly the first two thirds of the month, and the Sun moves into Aquarius around January 19 to 21, with the exact day set by your birth year and the time zone you were born in. The table on this page gives the precise moment for 2026 and 2027.
| Year | Aquarius starts (US Eastern) |
|---|---|
| 2026 | January 19, 8:45 PM EST |
| 2027 | January 20, 2:30 AM EST |
Calculated from the Sun's position, rounded to the nearest minute (official almanacs can differ by one minute). Born before that moment: Capricorn. Born at or after it: Aquarius. All years on zodiac sign dates.
Which zodiac signs are born in January?
Two of them. Capricorn, the sign that began at the December solstice, runs through the early and middle part of January. Somewhere around the 20th the Sun crosses into Aquarius, which carries on until the middle of February. Capricorn covers more of January's calendar days, so a January birthday is more likely to fall under it.
The pair has an unusual link. In traditional astrology both signs were assigned to Saturn, the slowest planet you can see without a telescope. Capricorn shows the side of Saturn that builds walls and keeps schedules. Aquarius shows the side that writes rules for a whole community and then asks whether those rules still make sense. Modern astrologers add Uranus as the ruler of Aquarius, which is why it is often called the more unconventional of the two.

Capricorn: born January 1 to about the 19th
A January Capricorn arrives in the middle of the sign's season, when days in the Northern Hemisphere are short and cold. Astrologers read Capricorn as cardinal earth: a sign that likes to start things, but only on firm ground. Its symbol, the sea-goat, has the front of a goat and the tail of a fish, a creature that climbs out of the water and keeps going until it reaches the top of the mountain.
In daily life, Capricorn tends to be the person who reads the instructions, keeps the receipts and has a five-year plan they rarely talk about. The humor is dry, trust is earned slowly, and promises are taken seriously. The Capricorn sign page covers the sign in depth.
Because Capricorn season spans the holidays and the turn of the year, astrologers like to joke that the sign arrives holding a calendar. Behind the joke sits a real theme: time. Capricorns are often described as people who grow lighter with age, taking life very seriously in their twenties and loosening up once they have proved what they set out to prove.
- Strengths people often name: patience, reliability, a long view and a knack for running things.
- Common blind spots: working through weekends, treating rest as a prize that has to be earned, and a reluctance to ask for help.
- What a Capricorn tends to value: competence, loyalty and people who do what they said they would.
Aquarius: born from about January 20
The late-January birthdays belong to Aquarius, the fixed air sign. Fixed signs hold their course, and air is the element of thought and talk, so Aquarius tends to cling to ideas rather than possessions. Its symbol is a figure pouring water out for everyone, an image that suits a sign more interested in the neighborhood, the team or the cause than in private comfort.
Aquarians are often described as friendly but hard to know well. They can chat with anyone at a party and still keep their inner life private. They like to question the way things have always been done, and once they have made up their minds they can be every bit as stubborn as a Capricorn. The Aquarius sign page has the full portrait.
In friendship, an Aquarius is often the person who keeps a wide circle of very different people connected. Romance tends to begin as friendship, and a partner who wants constant closeness may find the sign's independence hard to read at first. The Aquarius compatibility page goes through each sign.
- Strengths people often name: originality, fairness, loyalty to friends and a calm head when others panic.
- Common blind spots: arguing on principle, holding feelings at a distance and rejecting advice simply because it is advice.
Born on the Capricorn-Aquarius cusp?
If your birthday is January 19, 20 or 21, you may have read that you were born on the cusp. Popular astrology books describe this stretch as a blend of Capricorn ambition and Aquarian eccentricity, and some give it a name of its own. It is a fun idea, and plenty of people recognize themselves in it, but it is not a rule of classical astrology.
In a birth chart the Sun stands at one exact degree. On January 20 of a given year it might sit in the last degree of Capricorn in the morning and in the first degree of Aquarius by evening. You are one sign or the other, and the minute you were born decides which. To check, run your birth data through the birth chart calculator. If you still feel like a mix, the reason usually lies elsewhere in the chart, for example a Mercury or Venus placed in Aquarius.
Why does the January change date move?
Calendars and the Sun keep slightly different time. The Sun needs about a quarter of a day more than 365 days to come back to the start of Aquarius, so in each ordinary year the change lands roughly six hours later on the clock than the year before. Every leap year pulls it back again. That is why one list says January 20 and another says January 19.
Time zones add a second layer. Picture two babies born at the same instant, one in Honolulu at 9 p.m. on January 19 and one in New York, where the clock already reads 2 a.m. on January 20. Their birth certificates show different dates, yet the Sun stood in the same spot for both. A sign change that happens late at night on the East Coast can therefore fall on another calendar day for families in Hawaii or California.
For 2026 and 2027, the exact minute of the change in US Eastern time is listed in the table on this page. For all twelve signs, see zodiac sign dates.
What else shapes a January birthday?
Your Sun sign answers one question: where the Sun was on your birthday. The Moon switches signs every couple of days, and the rising sign turns over about every two hours, so two people born on January 10 can come across very differently. A Capricorn with a Leo Moon may be warmer and more openly playful than the sign's reputation suggests, while one with Aquarius rising can seem a bit distant to strangers before the ice breaks.
With a known birth time, the big three calculator lays out all three of your main signs in one go. If the time is unknown, the moon sign calculator can still find your Moon on most dates, because the Moon stays in one sign for more than two days.
January birthstone and birth flowers
Outside astrology, January has its own folk customs. The birthstone is garnet, a deep red stone that tradition links with steadiness and trust. The birth flowers are the carnation and the snowdrop, one of the first plants to push up through late-winter snow. These customs come from jewelers, gardeners and old almanacs rather than from the zodiac, so they are the same for Capricorn and Aquarius babies.
