What Is the November Zodiac Sign? Scorpio and Sagittarius
November has two zodiac signs: Scorpio until around November 21, and Sagittarius from about November 21 or 22 to the end of the month.

November babies split into two groups: Scorpios from the 1st to about the 21st, and Sagittarians for the nine or so days after that. The change comes around the 21st or 22nd, slightly earlier in the month than the summer switches. Precise times for 2026 and 2027 appear in the table near the top.
| Year | Sagittarius starts (US Eastern) |
|---|---|
| 2026 | November 22, 2:23 AM EST |
| 2027 | November 22, 8:16 AM EST |

Scorpio or Sagittarius in November?
Scorpio started in late October and covers November until about the 21st. Sagittarius then runs until the winter solstice in late December. A birthday from November 1 to 20 is Scorpio in every year; one from November 24 to 30 is Sagittarius in every year.
The month moves from water to fire, from a fixed sign that digs deep to a mutable sign that wants to roam. Astrologers often describe the shift as going from a closed door to an open road.
| Sign | November dates | Element and mode | Ruler | Symbol |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scorpio | November 1 to about November 21 | Water, fixed | Mars, modern co-ruler Pluto | Scorpion |
| Sagittarius | About November 21 or 22 to November 30 | Fire, mutable | Jupiter | Archer (centaur) |
Scorpio: most of November
The Scorpio stretch of November is linked in astrology with intensity, privacy and staying power. People born then are often described as people who read a room carefully, say less than they know, and do not forget a kindness or a betrayal.
Mars gives the sign its courage and Pluto, in the modern reading, its interest in what is hidden. The darker side can show up as jealousy or a need for control. The Scorpio page describes the sign in depth.
Scorpio's symbol is the scorpion, though older writers sometimes paired it with the eagle, as if the sign could either sting or rise above the fight. Many astrologers still use that double image for the choice a Scorpio faces when hurt.
Sagittarius: the last stretch
Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, the planet astrology connects with growth, faith and wide horizons. Late-November Sagittarians are said to be frank, funny and restless, happiest when they are learning something or heading somewhere new.
Its emblem is a centaur drawing a bow at a far-off mark. Typical weak spots are bluntness and a habit of promising more than the calendar allows. Find more on the Sagittarius page.
Late-November Sagittarians tend to keep friendships light and wide rather than few and heavy. They often learn best by doing and by going: a trip, a class, a long conversation with a stranger on a train.
Why November changes on the 21st
In summer the signs change around the 22nd or 23rd, but by November the switch has moved closer to the 21st or 22nd. The reason is Earth's orbit. Earth is closest to the Sun in early January, and around that time the Sun appears to move a little faster through the zodiac. The signs near that point, Sagittarius and Capricorn, are covered in fewer days than the summer signs.
On top of that, the change does not happen at the same hour every year. It moves by several hours from year to year until a leap year resets it, and a moment that is late evening in Seattle is already the next day in Tokyo. That is why November 21 can fall on either side of the line.
A small practical note: daylight saving time ends in early November, so the table shows the change in Eastern Standard Time.
The Scorpio-Sagittarius cusp
Popular astrology calls the days around November 18 to 24 the "cusp of revolution" and gives people born then a fiery, intense mix. It makes for a good story, but it is a modern idea, not a classical rule.
A chart places the Sun at a single degree, never on a fence. Born on November 21, you could be a late Scorpio or an early Sagittarius depending on the hour. What you cannot be is both. These steps settle it:
- Find the switch for the year you were born in the table near the top
- Convert it from US Eastern time to your birthplace's time zone
- Check your birth time on your birth certificate and compare
- Or enter everything in the birth chart calculator, which shows the Sun's exact degree
Scorpio and Sagittarius, side by side
These neighbors share no element and no mode, and astrologers often describe them as near opposites in temperament. The contrast is easiest to see in ordinary situations:
- Making friends: Scorpio keeps a small inner circle, Sagittarius knows people in every city
- Telling the truth: Scorpio keeps its own counsel, Sagittarius blurts it out
- Free time: Scorpio goes deep into one interest, Sagittarius samples five
- After a fight: Scorpio remembers, Sagittarius has already moved on
What links them is intensity of a sort. Scorpio is intense about people and Sagittarius about ideas. The Scorpio and Sagittarius page looks at how the two do together.
More than a Sun sign
A Sun sign is a starting point. If you are a Scorpio who feels more like an open book, your Moon or rising sign may be in a lighter sign such as Gemini or Sagittarius. If you are a Sagittarius who prefers staying home, look at your Moon.
For the trio in one place, try the big three calculator; the Moon sign calculator covers the emotional side by itself.
November birthstones and flowers
The modern US list gives November two birthstones, topaz and citrine, both often found in warm yellow and orange shades. The chrysanthemum is the November birth flower in most lists.
Like all birth months' stones and flowers, these are traditions from the jewelry and flower trades and have no astrological meaning. The chrysanthemum fits the season simply because it blooms late, when most garden flowers are gone, and the golden shades of topaz and citrine echo the fall colors.
