Zodiac signs by month
July Zodiac Sign: Cancer or Leo?
July belongs to two signs: Cancer until around July 22, then Leo from about July 22 or 23 to the end of the month.
Born in July? Check your sign
If your birthday is in July, you are a Cancer for roughly the first three weeks and a Leo for the last nine or ten days. The handover lands around the 22nd or 23rd, and you can read the precise 2026 and 2027 times in the table near the top. This page covers what each part of the month tends to be like, what a cusp birthday really means, and what else in your chart is worth a look.

Which signs fall in July?
Cancer began in late June, so it already holds the first two-thirds of July. Leo takes over for the final stretch and carries on into late August. That makes most July birthdays Cancer birthdays, which surprises people who think of July as the Leo month.
The two signs could hardly be more different. Cancer is a water sign that reacts to the world through feeling and memory. Leo is a fire sign that reacts by stepping forward. Going from one to the other in the middle of summer is like going from a family dinner to a stage.
| Sign | Part of July | Element | Mode | Ruler | Symbol |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cancer | July 1 to about July 22 | Water | Cardinal | Moon | Crab |
| Leo | About July 22 or 23 to July 31 | Fire | Fixed | Sun | Lion |
Early July: Cancer, the caretaker
Cancer is ruled by the Moon, and astrologers read it as the sign of home, family and the past. People born in the first weeks of July are often described as protective of the few people they let close, loyal to old friends, and sharp at sensing a mood the moment they walk into a room.
As a cardinal sign, Cancer starts things, even if it does so the way a crab moves: from the side, after some testing of the water. The usual weak spot is holding on too long, to a grudge, a hurt or a house full of keepsakes. Read the full portrait on the Cancer sign page.
Late July: Leo, the warm-hearted lead
The Sun rules Leo and no other sign, which is why astrologers link it with warmth, pride and a wish to be seen. Late-July birthdays are said to bring a generous streak, a flair for making an evening feel like an occasion, and a fixed sign's staying power once they commit to a person or a plan.
The flip side is a thin skin about being ignored or criticized in public. Leo tends to give loudly and expects some applause in return. More on that on the Leo sign page.
Born on the Cancer-Leo cusp?
If you were born between July 21 and 24, you may have read that you sit on the cusp and carry a mix of both signs. Classical astrology does not work that way. The Sun cannot stand in two signs at once, so whichever side of the changeover your birth landed on is your sign.
The idea of blended cusp personalities is a modern, popular one. A well-known birthday book from the 1990s even gave this cusp a name, the "cusp of oscillation". Some people find it describes them well, and that is fine, but it is a reading tradition, not a rule of the zodiac. To settle your own sign you need three things:
- Your birth date, which narrows it to one or two possible signs
- Your birth time, as exact as your records allow
- Your birthplace, so the time can be converted to the moment the Sun changed sign
Why the change moves each year
Our calendar and the Sun's path do not run at quite the same pace. The Sun needs a little more than 365 days to return to the same zodiac degree, so the Cancer-to-Leo changeover creeps a quarter of a day later each year, and every leap day nudges it back. That is why one year shows July 22 and another shows July 23.
Time zones add a second layer. If the Sun enters Leo at 10 p.m. in Honolulu, it is already the next morning in New York. Two babies born at the same instant can therefore have different birth dates and still share a sign, or the same birth date and different signs.
July has one more quirk. In early July Earth is at its farthest from the Sun, and the Sun appears to move a little slower along the zodiac. Cancer, which spans that period, is the longest sign of the year at a bit over 31 days.
Do Cancer and Leo get along?
As next-door neighbors on the wheel, Cancer and Leo form a semi-sextile, an angle astrologers treat as mild and slightly awkward. They have neither element nor mode in common: water meets fire, cardinal meets fixed. What they do share is a big heart. Cancer shows it through care and Leo through generosity, and when each values the other's style, the pairing can feel very warm.
The Cancer and Leo compatibility page goes into how the two tend to handle love, friendship and arguments.
What else matters besides the Sun?
Your Sun sign is the part everyone knows, but a birth chart has many more layers. Two Cancers born a week apart can feel quite different because the Moon and the rising sign change much faster than the Sun.
- Sun sign: your core drive and the way you shine, Cancer or Leo for July
- Moon sign: your emotional habits, it changes every two to three days (Moon sign calculator)
- Rising sign: the first impression you make, it changes roughly every two hours (rising sign calculator)
The big three calculator shows all three at once from your birth date, time and place.
July birthstone and birth flower
Birthstones and birth flowers come from folk custom and the jewelry and flower trades, not from astrology. They are a nice extra for a gift, nothing more.
The July birthstone is the ruby, a deep red stone that the modern US list, drawn up by American jewelers in 1912, has kept for this month ever since. The July birth flowers are usually given as larkspur and the water lily. Fittingly, the water lily suits the Cancer part of the month and the ruby's red suits Leo, though nobody planned it that way.
