Scorpio Zodiac Sign: Personality, Love, Work and Meaning
Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac, a fixed water sign ruled by Pluto and traditionally by Mars, known for intensity, loyalty, privacy and emotional depth.
What is my zodiac sign?
Scorpio is the eighth zodiac sign and the Sun sign of people born from about October 23 to November 21. It is a fixed water sign with two rulers, Pluto in modern astrology and Mars in the traditional system, and its symbol is the scorpion. Astrologers describe Scorpio as intense, private and fiercely loyal, a sign that cares less about surfaces than about what is going on underneath.

What is a Scorpio?
A Scorpio is someone whose Sun was in the eighth sign at birth. In the Northern Hemisphere, Scorpio season is deep autumn: leaves fall, the light fades, and the year turns toward decay and rest. That is why the sign is tied to themes of endings, transformation and things that happen out of sight.
As a fixed sign, Scorpio holds the middle of its season and does not let go easily. As a water sign, it lives through feeling. Fixed water is often compared to a deep lake: still on top and very deep below. Mars, the traditional ruler, gives the sign its fighting spirit and its sting. Pluto, assigned to Scorpio after its discovery in 1930, adds the themes of power, secrets and rebirth.
Scorpio is one of the most misread signs. The rest of this page separates the popular image from what astrologers actually mean.
What is the Scorpio personality really like?
Scorpios tend to watch before they speak. They read people well, notice what goes unsaid and remember it. Small talk can feel pointless to them, but a real conversation about something that matters can last until 3 a.m.
The core of the sign is commitment. When a Scorpio decides you are one of theirs, the loyalty runs very deep, and the protectiveness can be fierce. They are often the friend you call in a genuine crisis, because they are not scared of hard feelings and will not flinch at the ugly details.
Many popular claims about Scorpio are exaggerated. The table puts a few common ones next to a closer reading of the tradition.
| Popular claim | Closer reading |
|---|---|
| Scorpios are vengeful | Scorpio remembers betrayal and protects itself; revenge is the unhealthy extreme, not the rule |
| Scorpios are obsessed with sex | The sign is linked with intimacy and merging in every sense, emotional as much as physical |
| Scorpios are secretive | Scorpio guards its privacy until trust exists, then can be strikingly honest |
| Scorpios are dark | The sign is comfortable with topics others avoid, such as loss, power and change |
| Scorpios are jealous | Fixed water bonds deeply; jealousy is the fear of losing that bond |
What are Scorpio's blind spots?
Trust is the hinge of the sign, and its main weak point. A Scorpio who has been hurt can test people over and over, waiting for the betrayal they expect. Tests like that can push away the very people who would have stayed.
Control is the second issue. Because the sign feels so much, it can try to manage situations and people so nothing catches it off guard. Holding back information, keeping score and reading hidden meaning into innocent comments are all versions of the same reflex.
Letting go is the long lesson. Fixed signs hold on, and Scorpio holds on to grudges and old pain as firmly as it holds on to love. Taurus, the opposite sign, offers a simpler way of being: enjoy what is here and let some things be exactly what they appear to be.
What is Scorpio like in love?
Scorpio does not do casual very well. Even a light flirtation can turn serious quickly, and the sign wants a partner who can handle emotional honesty and does not run from conflict. Once committed, Scorpios are devoted, attentive and protective.
By the classical rules, the other water signs, Cancer and Pisces, and the earth signs Virgo and Capricorn are natural fits. The guides to Cancer and Scorpio and Virgo and Scorpio cover two of the easiest matches. Leo and Scorpio and Aries and Scorpio are harder, more combustible pairings. Every combination is listed on the Scorpio compatibility page.
Many people have Venus in Scorpio without a Scorpio Sun. The Venus sign calculator shows whether that is true for you.
Scorpio at work
Scorpios are drawn to work that goes beneath the surface. Research, investigation, psychology, medicine and surgery, finance and auditing, crisis work, security and any role that handles sensitive information tend to suit the sign. So does work that deals with the end of things: estates, insurance, restructuring.
As colleagues, Scorpios are focused and hard to distract, with a strong memory for who did what. They do not like being micromanaged and do not forget a broken promise. A Scorpio given trust, privacy and a hard problem will often outwork everyone in the room.
Scorpio Sun, Moon and rising: what is the difference?
The Sun in Scorpio describes a life driven by depth and transformation. The Moon in Scorpio is considered a hard placement in traditional astrology, because the gentle Moon sits in a sign of extremes; emotionally it often means strong feelings held very privately. Scorpio rising gives a first impression that is magnetic, guarded and hard to read.
It is common to have a quiet Scorpio Sun with a cheerful Sagittarius rising, or an easygoing Libra Sun with a Scorpio Moon that nobody sees at first. The rising sign calculator, the moon sign calculator and the big three calculator show your own mix.
The scorpion and Orion
In Greek myth, a giant scorpion was sent to kill the hunter Orion, who had boasted that he could kill any creature on Earth. Accounts differ on who sent it, with Gaia and Artemis the usual candidates. Both were placed in the sky, but on opposite sides, so that Orion sets as the Scorpion rises and the two are never seen in full at the same time. The red star Antares marks the scorpion's heart.
The Scorpio glyph is an M with an arrow-shaped tail, the sting of the scorpion. Some modern astrologers also give the sign two higher symbols, the eagle and the phoenix, to show its potential to rise above old hurts. Those are later additions, not part of the classical zodiac.
Born on the Scorpio cusp?
Birthdays near the Libra or Sagittarius border need a quick check, because the Sun's entry into Scorpio does not happen on the same date and time every year. Some calendars list the end of Scorpio a day later than others for exactly this reason.
The zodiac sign dates page shows the exact entry moment for your birth year. For complete certainty, the birth chart calculator uses your birth time and place. If you still read more like a Libra or a Sagittarius than a Scorpio, your Mercury or Venus may simply sit in that sign.
