March Zodiac Sign: Pisces or Aries?
March starts in Pisces and switches to Aries at the March equinox, which falls around the 19th to 21st depending on the year and time zone.
Born in March? Check your sign
A March birthday is either Pisces or Aries. Pisces runs from mid-February to the March equinox, and Aries begins the moment the Sun crosses the equinox point, usually on March 20 in US time zones and sometimes a day earlier or later. That line is also where the astrological year ends and starts again.
| Year | Aries starts (US Eastern) |
|---|---|
| 2026 | March 20, 10:46 AM EDT |
| 2027 | March 20, 4:25 PM EDT |
Calculated from the Sun's position, rounded to the nearest minute (official almanacs can differ by one minute). Born before that moment: Pisces. Born at or after it: Aries. All years on zodiac sign dates.
Early March: who is the Pisces?
Pisces is mutable water, a sign that adapts to its surroundings the way water takes the shape of a glass. People with the Sun here are often gentle, artistic and tuned in to the mood of a room. Many describe a rich inner life, with daydreams, music or spiritual interests taking up more space than they let on.
The weak spot is the flip side of that sensitivity. Pisces can avoid hard conversations, drift with other people's plans or take on more of a friend's trouble than is healthy. Mutable signs bend easily, and Pisces sometimes bends further than it should. The Pisces page has more on the sign.
In older astrology Pisces belonged to Jupiter, the planet of faith and generosity, before Neptune was found. That traditional ruler is a useful reminder that the sign is not only soft. It can be expansive, hopeful and quietly sure of things it cannot prove.
- Often admired for: compassion, imagination, a forgiving nature and a quiet sense of humor.
- Often working on: firm boundaries, follow-through and saying what they want out loud.
Late March: who is the Aries?
After the equinox the Sun enters Aries, cardinal fire ruled by Mars. Where Pisces waits to see how things feel, Aries tends to move first and sort out the details later. Late-March Aries people are usually described as direct, energetic and competitive, with little patience for slow meetings or vague answers.
Their blind spots are the classic ones of a starter sign: a temper that flares fast, plans dropped once the excitement fades, and a habit of speaking before listening. On the plus side, an Aries rarely holds a grudge for long. The Aries page goes into detail.
Being born just after the equinox gives late-March Aries a special place in astrological lore. These are the opening degrees of the opening sign, so writers often describe them as the rawest, most eager form of the starting spark, with all of the sign's courage and none of its caution.
- Often admired for: courage, honesty, enthusiasm and quick recovery after a setback.
- Often working on: patience, finishing what they start and leaving room for slower people.
What does a Pisces-Aries cusp birthday mean?
Born on March 19, 20 or 21? Then you have probably met the idea of the cusp of rebirth, a popular label for people supposedly mixing Pisces dreaminess with Aries drive. Treat it as a modern talking point. Classical astrology has no in-between sign, and the Sun is never in two places at once.
What does exist is genuine uncertainty about which side of the line you landed on, because the equinox happens at a specific minute. Someone born at 8 a.m. on March 20 can be Pisces while a person born that evening, in the same city and year, is Aries. Your birth time and place answer it; the birth chart calculator shows the Sun's degree directly.
If nobody wrote the time down, you can still narrow it down. Run a chart once for early morning and once for late evening on your birthday and see whether the Sun changes sign in between. If it does not, your sign is settled anyway.
Why the equinox is not always March 21
Many older books list Aries as starting on March 21, but in recent decades the equinox has usually fallen on March 20 in North America, and in a few years even on March 19. Calendar arithmetic is the reason. Our calendar year is a fraction shorter than the time the Sun takes to return to the equinox point, the leap day corrects the gap only every four years, and the century rule of the Gregorian calendar adds a slower drift on top.
Location matters as well. The equinox happens at one instant for the whole planet, so it can be late evening on March 19 in Los Angeles while it is already March 20 in New York. Exact times for 2026 and 2027 are in the table on this page, and the zodiac sign dates page explains the same effect for every sign.
Beyond the Sun: Moon and rising sign
Two people born on March 25 share an Aries Sun, but the Moon and the rising sign may differ completely. That explains why one March Aries is loud and impatient while another is soft-spoken. A Pisces Sun with an Aries Moon can react with surprising heat, and an Aries Sun with Pisces rising may first come across as dreamy and mild.
If you know your birth time, the big three calculator puts all three signs side by side, which is often more telling than the Sun sign alone.
Which signs suit a March birthday?
March gives you two very different sets of natural allies, because Pisces and Aries share neither an element nor a mode. Astrology looks first at element: same-element signs sit four signs apart in a trine, and complementary elements sit two apart in a sextile.
| Sign | Same element (trine) | Supportive element (sextile) | Opposite sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pisces | Cancer, Scorpio | Taurus, Capricorn | Virgo |
| Aries | Leo, Sagittarius | Gemini, Aquarius | Libra |
Easy does not mean better. Squares and oppositions bring friction, and friction can keep a relationship awake. The Pisces compatibility and Aries compatibility hubs walk through every pairing.
Seasons, hemispheres and March traditions
In the Northern Hemisphere the March equinox marks the start of spring, and that seasonal picture shaped how Aries was described. South of the equator it is the start of autumn, yet the tropical zodiac stays the same everywhere: an Aries born in Sydney has the same Sun sign as one born in Boston.
Folk customs add their own symbols. The usual March birthstone is aquamarine, with bloodstone as the older alternative, and the birth flower is the daffodil, sometimes listed as the jonquil. These traditions are separate from astrology and apply to Pisces and Aries birthdays alike.
