What Zodiac Sign Is February? Aquarius and Pisces
February birthdays up to about the 17th are Aquarius; from around the 18th or 19th the Sun is in Pisces, and that includes every February 29.

February is split between Aquarius and Pisces. Aquarius covers the first two and a half weeks, and the Sun moves into Pisces around February 18 or 19, depending on the year and the time zone of your birth. Leap-day babies are always Pisces.

February signs at a glance
Both February signs sit at the far end of the zodiac. Aquarius is sign eleven of twelve and Pisces is sign twelve, so a February birthday always falls in the last stretch of the astrological year, which starts over with Aries at the March equinox.
- February 1 to about 17: Aquarius, fixed air, traditionally Saturn's sign, with Uranus as its modern ruler.
- About February 18 or 19: the Sun changes sign at a moment that moves from year to year.
- About February 19 to the end of the month: Pisces, mutable water, traditionally Jupiter's sign, with Neptune as its modern ruler.
- February 29: always Pisces.
Aquarius in February: the independent thinker
Early-February Aquarians are born in the middle of their sign. Astrology describes Aquarius as a mind that likes to step back and look at the whole system: how a group works, why a rule exists, what would happen if everyone did things differently. Fixed air makes that thinking persistent. Once an Aquarius adopts a view, a casual counterargument rarely moves it.
Socially, the sign is easygoing and curious about people from every background, yet it values personal space and dislikes being told how to feel. Friendships often matter as much as romance. You can read the full profile on the Aquarius sign page.
February Aquarians share their month with Valentine's Day, a running joke among astrologers: the sign most likely to call romance a social habit gets the holiday of hearts. In practice many Aquarians are devoted partners. They just show it through honesty, shared projects and giving each other room rather than through grand gestures.
Pisces in February: the absorbent dreamer
From about the 19th the tone changes. Pisces is mutable water, the most flexible version of the most emotional element. Its symbol shows two fish swimming in opposite directions, tied together by a cord, which astrologers read as a sign pulled between the everyday world and an inner one full of images, moods and hunches.
Pisces people are often described as kind, imaginative and quick to pick up how others feel, sometimes before those people know it themselves. The same openness can make it hard to say no or to notice where their own feelings end and someone else's begin. The Pisces sign page explains the sign in more depth.
Late February is also the tail end of winter in most of the United States, and Pisces is the tail end of the zodiac. Astrologers often say the sign carries a trace of all eleven signs before it, one way of explaining why Pisces people blend so easily into very different company.
| Question | Aquarius tendency | Pisces tendency |
|---|---|---|
| How do you make sense of a problem? | Step back and think it through | Feel your way into it |
| What wears you out? | Being told what to think | Harsh settings and conflict |
| What do friends rely on you for? | A fresh point of view | Sympathy and patience |
What sign is a leap-day birthday?
Pisces, every time. The Sun reaches Pisces around February 18 or 19 in every year of the current era, so by February 29 it is already about ten degrees into the sign. Leap-day babies who celebrate on February 28 or March 1 in ordinary years are Pisces on all three dates as well.
Leap years also explain part of the cusp confusion. The extra day is added to keep the calendar in step with the Sun, and each time it is inserted the moment of every sign change jumps back by about three quarters of a day. Between leap years it creeps forward by around six hours a year. That pattern is why February 18 is Pisces in some years and Aquarius in others.
Is there a real Aquarius-Pisces cusp?
Birthday books often call February 15 to 21 the cusp of sensitivity and describe people born then as part visionary, part mystic. That makes for an appealing portrait, but it is a modern idea rather than a classical rule. Traditional astrology recognizes twelve signs and no hybrids between them.
Your Sun was either in the final degree of Aquarius or in the opening degree of Pisces when you were born, and the time on your birth certificate is what separates the two. A time zone matters too: a change that happens at 11 p.m. in Chicago has already passed midnight in New York. The birth chart calculator takes date, time and place and shows the Sun's exact degree. The zodiac sign dates page explains the mechanics for every sign.
No birth time on hand? Ask a parent or look at the long-form birth certificate. Many states print the hour on it, and a copy can be ordered from the vital records office in your birth state.
Moon and rising sign: why you may not feel typical
A Pisces who is blunt and practical, or an Aquarius who cries at every movie, is not a mistake. Your Sun sign is one of many placements, and two others are especially visible. The Moon sign colors your emotional reflexes, and the rising sign colors the first impression you make.
An Aquarius Sun with a Moon in Cancer might be more sentimental than the textbook water bearer. A Pisces Sun with Capricorn rising can look composed and businesslike on the outside. All three placements come out of the big three calculator once you enter date, time and place, and the rising sign calculator focuses on the Ascendant alone.
Venus is worth a look as well. It always stays within two signs of the Sun, so most February birthdays have Venus somewhere between Capricorn and Aries, and that placement says more about romantic style than the Sun does. The Venus sign calculator finds yours.
Who do February signs get along with?
Classical astrology judges sign pairs through element and through how many signs apart they sit, not through percentages. Signs of the same element form a trine and usually understand each other quickly. Fire and air support each other, as do earth and water, through the sextile.
- Aquarius feels most at ease with the other air signs, Gemini and Libra, and gets a lively spark from the fire signs Aries and Sagittarius.
- Pisces relaxes around the water signs Cancer and Scorpio and finds steady support in the earth signs Taurus and Capricorn.
- The opposite signs, Leo for Aquarius and Virgo for Pisces, bring strong attraction and plenty to learn from each other.
Every sign has its own hub with all twelve pairings: see Aquarius compatibility and Pisces compatibility. Sun signs are only the opening chapter of a match, though, and the rest of the two charts often tells a different story.
February birthstone and birth flowers
By folk tradition the February birthstone is amethyst, a purple quartz once thought to keep the wearer clear-headed. The birth flowers are the violet and the primrose. These are customs from jewelry and gardening lore, not astrology, and they apply to the whole month regardless of sign.
