What is my zodiac sign?
Libra is the seventh sign of the zodiac, the Sun sign for birthdays from about September 23 to October 22. It is a cardinal air sign ruled by Venus, and its symbol is a pair of scales. Astrologers link Libra with fairness, good taste and a gift for partnership, along with a famous difficulty making up its mind.

What is a Libra?
Libra starts at the September equinox, when day and night are close to equal length across most of the world. It is hard to think of a better image for the sign. Libra is about balance: between two people, two arguments, two ways of seeing a room.
As a cardinal sign, Libra opens autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and likes to take the lead, though its leadership tends to look like mediation rather than command. As an air sign, it works through ideas and conversation. Venus rules Libra as well as Taurus, but where Taurus enjoys beauty through the senses, Libra enjoys it through harmony, proportion and good manners. Saturn is traditionally exalted in Libra, which adds a serious respect for rules and justice.
Libra is also the halfway point of the zodiac, the first sign that faces outward toward other people. The first six signs build a self, and from Libra on, the signs turn to relationships and the wider world.
What are Libra personality traits?
Libras are the people who seat the dinner guests so everyone has someone to talk to. They notice when one person in a meeting has not spoken and ask what they think. Fairness is close to a physical need for this sign; an unjust situation bothers a Libra the way a crooked picture frame bothers a Virgo.
Charm is the trait people mention first, and it is real, but it is not only about being liked. Libra understands that how something is said often decides whether it is heard. That makes the sign a natural negotiator, host, and friend to people on both sides of an argument.
Aesthetics matter too. Many Libras have a strong eye for design, color and proportion, and an ugly or chaotic space can drain them in a way they find hard to explain.
Why are Libras so indecisive?
Because they see both sides, and both sides usually have a point. Choosing one can feel like doing an injustice to the other. A Libra may study a menu for ages and then order whatever their friend ordered.
The more serious version of this blind spot is people-pleasing. Keeping the peace can mean swallowing a real disagreement until it comes out sideways, or staying in a relationship that has stopped working because ending it would cause conflict. Aries, the opposite sign, carries the lesson Libra tends to need: sometimes the fair thing is to decide and accept that not everyone will be happy.
Libra also tends to define itself through partners. Time alone, and opinions formed without checking how they will land, help the sign know what it wants before it asks what others want.
What is Libra like in love?
Relationships are home ground for Libra. The sign is romantic in a classic way, enjoys courtship and tends to be thoughtful, attentive and fair-minded as a partner. Rudeness, crude behavior and constant conflict wear it down quickly.
Gemini and Aquarius share Libra's element, and Leo and Sagittarius bring the kind of fire that air keeps alight, so the classical rules rate all four highly. See Gemini and Libra and Leo and Libra for two easy pairings. Libra and Capricorn is a square between two cardinal signs, and Libra and Pisces is an unusual, gentle pair. The Libra compatibility hub has all twelve.
Because the 7th house of partnership corresponds to Libra in the natural zodiac, the 7th house guide is a good next read for anyone with planets in this sign.
Libra at work
Libras do well wherever people, fairness or beauty are part of the job. Law, mediation, diplomacy, human resources, design, fashion, hospitality, counseling and client relations all play to the sign. A Libra in a sales role often sells by building trust rather than pushing.
In teams, Libra tends to be the one who smooths friction and makes sure every voice is heard. The challenge is making hard calls under time pressure. Libras who set a deadline for their own decisions, and stick to it, find that their judgment is usually sound.
Libras also care about the look and feel of the workplace more than most. A pleasant, well-designed space and colleagues who treat each other with courtesy can lift their output noticeably, while a tense office drains them even when the work itself is fine.
Libra as Sun, Moon and rising sign
Libra means something slightly different in each of the three main placements of a chart.
| Placement | Area of life | How Libra colors it |
|---|---|---|
| Libra Sun | Identity and life direction | Seeks fairness, partnership and beauty |
| Libra Moon | Feelings and comfort | Calms down when the people around it are at peace |
| Libra rising | Outward style | Polished, friendly and easy to approach |
Libra rising also places Aries on the Descendant, the point of partnership, so these people often attract bold, direct partners. To find your own placements, use the rising sign calculator, the moon sign calculator or the big three calculator.
Why are the scales the symbol of Libra?
Libra is the only sign of the zodiac represented by an object rather than a person or an animal. For the early Greeks, the stars of Libra were the claws of the neighboring Scorpion. Later, in Roman times, the group became the scales, possibly because the autumn equinox, a point of balance, once fell there. The scales are often linked with Astraea, the goddess of justice also associated with Virgo.
The glyph is a horizontal line with a raised curve above it. It is read as the scales or as the Sun setting on the horizon, a reminder that Libra season begins as the nights start to grow longer than the days in the Northern Hemisphere.
Born on the Libra cusp?
If your birthday sits at the Virgo or Scorpio border, check the year. The Sun's entry into Libra coincides with the September equinox, which falls on slightly different dates and times from year to year. The zodiac sign dates page has the exact time for each year.
For a definite answer, the birth chart calculator uses your birth time and place. A baby born on equinox day can still be a Virgo if the birth came a few hours before the Sun crossed over; only the clock decides.
