Cancer Zodiac Sign: Personality, Love, Work and Symbol
Cancer is the fourth zodiac sign, a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon, linked with care, memory, home and strong protective instincts.
What is my zodiac sign?
Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac and the Sun sign for birthdays from about June 21 to July 22. It is a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon, symbolized by the crab. Astrologers describe Cancer as caring, protective and tuned to moods, with a hard shell that hides how much it feels.

What is a Cancer zodiac sign?
Cancer begins at the June solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The Tropic of Cancer got its name because, when it was named in antiquity, the Sun stood in this sign when it reached its northernmost point. So Cancer opens summer, and like every cardinal sign it starts something: here, the season of warmth, family gatherings and long evenings.
Water is the element of feeling and attachment. As the cardinal water sign, Cancer does not just feel things, it acts on them, usually by protecting, feeding or organizing the people it cares about. The Moon rules the sign, and the Moon is about needs, memory and the rhythm of daily life. That makes Cancer the sign most often linked with home and family, whether by birth or by choice.
What are Cancer personality traits?
Picture the friend who remembers your mother's surgery date, texts the morning of, and shows up with soup. That is the Cancer reputation in a single scene. The sign notices needs before they are spoken and tends to act on them quietly.
Cancer is also more ambitious than it gets credit for. Cardinal signs like to lead, and a Cancer who believes in a project will fight hard for it, especially if it protects something or someone. The crab moves sideways, but it does not let go.
- Emotional memory that holds on to birthdays, old jokes and old wounds alike
- A strong instinct to protect, whether it is children, coworkers or a stray cat
- Intuition about moods, often picking up tension the moment they walk in
- Loyalty to family and long friendships
- A gift for creating a sense of home in any space
What are Cancer's blind spots?
The shell is both protection and problem. When Cancer feels hurt, the instinct is to withdraw, go quiet and wait to be noticed. Other people often have no idea anything is wrong, which can deepen the hurt. Saying what you need early, in plain words, works better than hoping someone guesses.
Moodiness is the other common complaint. The Moon changes sign every two to three days, and Cancer is said to feel those tides strongly. A small slight can color a whole afternoon. Many Cancers find that simple routines, enough sleep and a regular call with someone they trust keep their footing steady.
Care can also slide into control. Doing everything for others feels loving, but it can leave a partner or a grown child with no room to look after themselves. Part of maturity for this sign is letting people struggle a little.
What is Cancer like in love?
In love, Cancer is devoted and sentimental. Anniversaries matter, old photos get kept, and the sign usually wants a relationship that feels like a home rather than an adventure. Trust comes slowly, but once given, it runs deep.
The classical rules favor the other water signs, Scorpio and Pisces, and the earth signs Taurus and Virgo. You can read the full guides for Cancer and Scorpio and Cancer and Virgo. Aries and Cancer is a square, a tougher angle where both signs want to lead in different ways. Capricorn is the opposite sign, and the two often balance each other: one tends the home, the other builds the structure around it. The Cancer compatibility hub covers the rest.
Cancer at work
Cancers tend to do well in roles where care is part of the job: nursing, teaching, social work, hospitality, real estate, human resources, food, history and archives, or running a family business. The sign often builds a small team that feels like a family and defends it fiercely.
The challenge at work is taking criticism personally. A comment about a report can feel like a comment about the person. Cancers who learn to separate the two, and to ask for feedback in private, tend to rise further. Their memory for people and details is a real advantage in any client-facing job.
Cancer as Sun, Moon or rising sign
The Moon rules Cancer, so a Cancer Moon is considered at home, and many astrologers see it as the strongest Moon placement for emotional depth. The Sun in Cancer gives the same themes as a life direction. Cancer rising shows them at the front door.
| Placement | Shows | Typical Cancer expression |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer Sun | Purpose and identity | Builds a life around belonging and the people it protects |
| Cancer Moon | Emotional needs | Needs a safe base and familiar faces to feel settled |
| Cancer rising | First impression | Soft-spoken and careful until trust is built |
Your Moon sign needs a birth date and ideally a time, and your rising sign needs an accurate time. The moon sign calculator and rising sign calculator work them out, and the big three calculator puts all three side by side.
Why is Cancer a crab?
In Greek myth, Hera sent a giant crab to attack Heracles while he was fighting the many-headed Hydra. The crab pinched his foot, and Heracles crushed it. Hera, who hated the hero, rewarded the crab's loyalty with a place among the stars. The constellation is faint, but it holds a well-known star cluster called the Beehive.
The Cancer glyph shows two curled shapes facing each other, often read as the claws of a crab or as two curls guarding a center. Astrologers like the crab as an image because it fits the sign so well: soft inside, armored outside, and very hard to shake once it has taken hold.
Born on the Cancer cusp?
Birthdays at the Gemini end or the Leo end of Cancer need an exact check. The Sun moves into a new sign at a precise moment that drifts a little each year, and time zones can push a birth onto the other side of the line.
Look up your year on the zodiac sign dates page or enter your details in the birth chart calculator. Your Sun will be in one sign, not both. If you feel like a blend, check where your Mercury and Venus fall; they are often in the neighboring sign.
