Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac, the Sun sign of people born from about April 20 to May 20. It is a fixed earth sign ruled by Venus, and the bull is its symbol. What does it mean to be a Taurus?
Being a Taurus means the Sun was in the second sign of the zodiac when you were born. In the Northern Hemisphere this is the middle of spring, when the first rush of growth settles into something you can harvest later. Astrologers read the sign in the same way: Aries starts, Taurus makes it last.
Earth is the element of the senses and of practical results. Fixed signs sit in the middle of a season and hold it steady. A fixed earth sign is therefore about as solid as the zodiac gets. Venus, the ruling planet, adds a love of beauty, pleasure and ease. Taurus is the Venus of the body: good food, soft fabric, a garden, music you can feel.
The traditional view also places the Moon in exaltation in Taurus, meaning it is considered especially comfortable there. That is one reason the sign is linked with calm nerves and a need for emotional steadiness.
What are Taurus strengths, and what happens when they go too far?
Most Taurus traits are useful right up to the point where they are not. The table below pairs each common trait with how it looks at its best and how it looks overdone.
| Trait | At its best | Overdone |
|---|---|---|
| Patience | Waits out a hard season without panic | Waits years too long to leave a bad situation |
| Loyalty | Shows up for the same people for decades | Stays somewhere out of habit, not choice |
| Love of comfort | Makes any room feel welcoming | Avoids every discomfort, even the useful kind |
| Determination | Finishes what others abandon | Ignores new information once the decision is made |
| Practical sense | Asks what a plan will actually take | Dismisses ideas that cannot be touched or counted |
People close to a Taurus tend to describe the same things: calm under pressure, a dry sense of humor, a reliable memory for what you like to eat. They also mention how hard it is to change a Taurus mind once it is made up.
Why is Taurus called stubborn?
Fixed signs resist change, and earth wants proof. Combine the two and you get a person who will not move until the evidence is in front of them, and sometimes not even then. Pushing harder usually makes things worse. A Taurus who feels rushed digs in.
The blind spot underneath is often fear of loss. If a job, a habit or a relationship has kept you safe, letting go of it can feel like stepping off solid ground. Taurus tends to handle change well when it is chosen freely and taken in small steps. A forced, sudden change is the hardest kind for this sign.
Another trap is comfort turning into routine that nobody questions. The same restaurant, the same route, the same answer. Trying one new thing a week sounds small, but for a Taurus it keeps the good kind of steadiness from going stale.
What is Taurus like in love?
Taurus is rarely in a hurry in love. The sign tends to watch for a while, test whether someone is consistent and only then commit. Once it does, it is affectionate in physical, everyday ways: cooking dinner, holding hands, remembering the exact coffee order.
By the classical rules, the other earth signs, Virgo and Capricorn, share Taurus's pace and values, and the water signs Cancer and Pisces bring the emotional warmth that earth can hold. Scorpio is the opposite sign, and the two often feel a strong pull around loyalty, privacy and possessiveness. Gemini, the next sign along, is a harder fit on paper, which the Taurus and Gemini guide looks at in detail. For every pairing, see Taurus compatibility.
The growth point for Taurus in love is jealousy. Wanting to keep what you have is natural. Treating a partner like a possession is where that turns sour.
Taurus at work
Taurus shines in work that rewards consistency and skill built over time. Crafts, cooking, design, finance roles, gardening and landscaping, music, building trades and anything with a tangible result tend to fit. The sign often prefers a stable role it can master to a string of exciting short projects.
In a team, a Taurus is the one who still has the spreadsheet updated in month six. Deadlines get met without drama. What frustrates the sign is change for its own sake: a new tool every quarter, a reorganization nobody explains. Give a Taurus clear reasons and some time, and resistance often turns into solid support.
Taurus Sun, Moon and rising: how do they differ?
As a Sun sign, Taurus describes what you value and how you build a life: slowly, with an eye on what will still be there in ten years. As a Moon sign, it describes your emotional needs, and here the classical exaltation matters. A Taurus Moon is often steadier than the Taurus Sun, needing rest, routine and physical comfort to feel at ease.
As a rising sign, Taurus shapes the first impression. People tend to see someone unhurried, pleasant and hard to read at first. A person can be a fiery Aries Sun with Taurus rising and still come across as the calmest person in the room until you know them.
You need a birth time for the rising sign and sometimes for the Moon, which changes signs every two to three days. The rising sign calculator, moon sign calculator and big three calculator all work it out from your birth data.
The bull: myth and symbol
The best-known myth behind Taurus is told in Ovid's Metamorphoses: Zeus took the form of a beautiful white bull, won the trust of the princess Europa and carried her across the sea to Crete. The bull was later honored with a place in the sky. The constellation Taurus also holds two famous star clusters, the Pleiades and the Hyades, and the bright orange star Aldebaran, often called the bull's eye.
The glyph is a circle with a curved line on top: the head and horns of a bull. Astrologers sometimes read the circle as the self or as the material world, held in place by the horns of desire. Either way, the image is solid, round and grounded, much like the sign.
Born near the start or end of Taurus?
Birthdays at the edges of Taurus fall either at the Aries border or at the Gemini border. Because the exact minute of the Sun's sign change moves a little each year, the usual date range is only a guide. To be sure, look up your birth year on the zodiac sign dates page, or enter your full birth data in the birth chart calculator.
A note on cusps: astrologers do not recognize a mixed Aries-Taurus or Taurus-Gemini sign. What people describe as cusp energy usually comes from other planets, such as Mercury or Venus, sitting in the neighboring sign.
