How is today's horoscope made?
Most horoscope columns come from one writer, often drafted weeks ahead, and readers have no way to see what the writer looked at. Ours is built the other way around. Each day the code asks the same fixed set of questions about the sky, and the reading you see is put together only from the answers. Nobody sits down and guesses what Tuesday might feel like for Scorpio.
These are the questions it checks for every date:
- Which sign the Moon is in, and whether it moves into the next sign during the day
- Exact aspects between the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto
- A New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon or Last Quarter
- A planet entering a new sign (an ingress)
- A planet stationing, which means turning retrograde or direct
Every one of those events has a small set of texts, written by people and held to one rule: describe a mood or a tendency, never claim that something is going to happen. When nothing exact takes place, the Moon carries the day on its own. Positions are calculated for the calendar date in US Eastern time. The weekly view follows the Moon from house to house with dates and lists every event in those seven days.
What are solar houses?
A full birth chart splits the sky into twelve houses based on your exact birth time and place. A horoscope written for a whole sign cannot know those details, so it uses solar houses instead: your Sun sign counts as the 1st house, the following sign as the 2nd, and so on around the zodiac. Newspaper astrologers have relied on this shortcut for a long time because it needs nothing but the sign.
The upshot is that one sky gives twelve different readings. Say the Moon is in Taurus. For Taurus that is the 1st house, a day about mood and how you come across. For Aries it is the 2nd house, money and the things you own. For Leo it is the 10th house, career and public standing. Same Moon, a different corner of life for each sign.
| House | Area of life | Moon in Taurus lands here for |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self, mood, appearance | Taurus |
| 2nd | Money, possessions, self-worth | Aries |
| 3rd | Talk, errands, siblings, short trips | Pisces |
| 4th | Home, family, roots | Aquarius |
| 5th | Fun, romance, creativity, children | Capricorn |
| 6th | Daily work, routines, habits | Sagittarius |
| 7th | Partners and one-on-one ties | Scorpio |
| 8th | Shared resources, intimacy, trust | Libra |
| 9th | Travel, study, beliefs | Virgo |
| 10th | Career, reputation, goals | Leo |
| 11th | Friends, groups, hopes | Cancer |
| 12th | Rest, solitude, what stays hidden | Gemini |
Is a Sun sign horoscope accurate for you?
Honestly, only in a general way. Your Sun sign is one placement out of many. Someone born the same week shares your Sun sign but may have a different Moon, a different rising sign and planets in completely different houses. A Sun sign horoscope describes the weather for everyone born in that month-long stretch. It is not a forecast written for you alone.
Personal transits are the precise version. They compare today's planets with your own birth chart, which takes your birth date, time and place. Saturn crossing your natal Moon says far more about you than Saturn moving through your solar 4th house. You can see where your own planets sit with the free birth chart calculator, and the personal reading works through your chart in depth.
If you know your rising sign, read the horoscope for that sign as well. Houses counted from the rising sign match the whole sign house system, which many astrologers use for birth charts, so the life areas often fit better. The rising sign calculator finds yours from your birth time.
How do you read today's Moon?
The Moon is the fastest body in the sky. It changes sign about every two to two and a half days and passes through all twelve signs in roughly four weeks. That makes it the natural clock of a daily horoscope: it sets the mood of a day, while the slower planets form the backdrop for weeks, months or years.
When the Moon moves through one of your solar houses, that area tends to draw more of your attention and feeling. In your 6th house, chores and to-do lists may seem louder than usual. In your 5th, you may want play more than duty. If the Moon changes sign during the day, the reading names both houses, because the tone can shift between morning and evening. The phases add a second layer:
- New Moon: the start of the cycle, a common moment to set an intention for the house it falls in
- First Quarter: about a week later, when plans meet some friction and want a decision
- Full Moon: the peak, often read as a time when feelings or results in that area come into view
- Last Quarter: a stage for clearing out, finishing and letting go before the next cycle
Today's Moon is a different question from the Moon at your birth. To find the sign the Moon was in when you were born, use the Moon sign calculator.
What do aspects and retrogrades mean?
An aspect is an angle between two planets. On the day it becomes exact, astrologers read the two planets as being in conversation, and the houses they occupy for your sign show which parts of life that conversation touches. The horoscope uses five classical aspects:
| Aspect | Angle | How it is usually read |
|---|---|---|
| Conjunction | 0° | Two energies merge and grow louder together |
| Sextile | 60° | An easy opening that still asks you to act |
| Square | 90° | Friction that pushes for an adjustment |
| Trine | 120° | Flow and ease, sometimes so easy it goes unused |
| Opposition | 180° | A pull between two sides that calls for balance |
Retrograde means a planet appears to move backward as seen from Earth. It does not really reverse, but astrologers treat the period as a time to review that planet's themes. Mercury does this about three times a year for roughly three weeks each time, which is why Mercury retrograde gets so much attention. The day a planet stations, turning retrograde or direct, is when its theme tends to feel strongest, so the horoscope flags it along with the house where it happens.
An ingress, a planet entering a new sign, changes the backdrop. The Moon does it constantly, the Sun once a month, and Saturn only every two to three years. A slow planet moving into one of your houses is worth keeping in mind well beyond the day it happens.
What can a daily horoscope do, and not do?
A good daily horoscope works as a prompt. It can point to a mood worth noticing, a part of life that may ask for attention, or a day that suits one kind of task better than another. Read as a five-minute check-in with yourself, it tends to be most useful.
- It can suggest a theme to watch, such as work, home or a close relationship
- It can help you pick a moment for small things, like a talk you have been putting off
- It cannot tell you what another person thinks or plans to do
- It cannot replace a doctor, a lawyer or a financial professional
- It cannot see your birth chart, which matters more than your Sun sign
We keep every text to tendencies on purpose. A reading of the sky describes conditions, not outcomes, and what you do with a quiet Tuesday or a tense Full Moon is up to you. For the ephemeris, time zones and sources behind the numbers, see how we calculate.
