Astrology Houses: What the 12 Zodiac Houses Mean
The astrology houses are twelve sections of a birth chart, each tied to an area of life such as self, money, home, partnership or career, and set by your exact birth time and place.
Step 1 of 2
Astrology houses, also called zodiac houses, divide the sky around your birthplace into twelve sections, each standing for one area of life. Planets describe what acts and signs describe how; the houses describe where in your life it shows up. Because the houses turn with the Earth, they are the most time-sensitive part of a chart, and yours can only be worked out from a precise birth time and location.
What are the houses in astrology?
Picture the horizon and the meridian at the moment and place of your birth. These two lines cross to make four angles: the Ascendant in the east, the Midheaven overhead, the Descendant in the west and the IC below the Earth. The space between them is divided into twelve houses, numbered counterclockwise from the Ascendant.
Every planet in your chart sits in one of those houses. A Venus in the 4th house is read differently from a Venus in the 10th, even in the same sign, because it acts in a different part of life: private and domestic in one case, public and professional in the other.
The order of the houses follows the zodiac. The 1st house has a kinship with Aries, the 2nd with Taurus, and so on to the 12th and Pisces. These are called natural signs. They describe the flavor of a house, not the sign that actually sits on it in your chart, which depends on your rising sign.

The houses also come in opposite pairs that balance each other: self and partner (1st and 7th), own and shared resources (2nd and 8th), near and far learning (3rd and 9th), private and public life (4th and 10th), personal joy and group life (5th and 11th), daily work and retreat (6th and 12th).
Are there 10 houses or 12 in astrology?
There are twelve. The search for 10 houses in astrology comes up often, likely from people who mean the 10th house or who mix the houses up with the ten planets used in modern astrology: the Sun, the Moon and Mercury through Pluto.
Western, Hellenistic and Vedic astrology all divide the chart into twelve houses, matching the twelve signs. What differs between traditions is where the borders between houses are drawn, not how many there are.
Angular, succedent and cadent houses
Astrologers sort the twelve houses into three groups of four, based on where they sit relative to the four angles of the chart.
- Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) begin at the four angles. Tradition counts them as the strongest places, where planets act most visibly.
- Succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) follow the angles. They are linked with resources, stability and what you build up over time.
- Cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) fall away from the angles toward the next one. They are linked with learning, adjusting and getting ready for change.
These groups mirror the modes of the signs. Cardinal signs are natural to angular houses, fixed signs to succedent ones and mutable signs to cadent ones. Astrologers also split the chart by the horizon: in Placidus and the other quadrant systems, houses 1 to 6 lie below it and are read as more personal, houses 7 to 12 above it as more public and shared with others.
House systems: Placidus, whole sign and equal
Astrologers broadly agree on what the houses mean but not on where their borders lie. These are three systems you will often meet:
- Placidus: a common default in Western astrology software and apps. It divides by time, giving each house a third of the hours a degree needs to climb from the horizon to the Midheaven. Houses come in different sizes, and close to the poles the method stops working for part of the zodiac.
- Whole sign: the oldest system, used in Hellenistic astrology and widely in Vedic astrology. The rising sign becomes the entire 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. Every house is exactly one sign, and the Midheaven becomes a point that can fall in different houses.
- Equal: each house spans 30 degrees, starting from the exact degree of the Ascendant. It is simple and works at any latitude, but like whole sign it lets the Midheaven drift away from the start of the 10th.
No system has been shown to be the right one. Astrologers choose by tradition and by what they find useful in practice. Planets close to a cusp are the ones most likely to change houses between systems. On our birth chart calculator you can view your houses in Placidus; for whole sign houses, count signs from your rising sign as described above.
Why your birth time matters
The zodiac turns once past the horizon about every 24 hours, so on average a new sign rises roughly every two hours. The Ascendant and all the house cusps move with it. Your Sun sign stays the same all day, but the house your Sun sits in changes as the hours pass.
Official records beat memory here. A time remembered by a relative can still give you the right rising sign if you were not born close to a change, but planets near a house cusp stay uncertain. With no time at all, signs and most aspects still work. The houses, the Ascendant and the Midheaven do not, which is why the rising sign calculator asks for the time as well.
How to read a planet in a house
A practical way to read any placement is to ask three questions in order. Which kind of drive is involved (the planet)? In what style does it work (the sign)? In which part of life does it show up (the house)? Mars in Gemini in the 10th house, for example, reads as drive expressed through talk and quick thinking, aimed at career and public life.
Then look at the ruler of each house cusp and where that planet sits. This links the houses to each other and is how astrologers read a house with no planets in it. Empty houses are normal: ten planets cannot fill twelve houses, and most charts have several.
